American Idol’s ratings are down and I am wondering if Fox is starting to feel it and cutting back on the changes that were made for the show this season. The show has just finished the audition phase and most of the Hollywood round and will start the brand new Vegas round on the show tomorrow. Tomorrow’s episode in Vegas where the contestants perform songs from The Beatles was slated to go two hours and then on Thursday the Top 20 would be revealed in another two hour episode.
Well today returning EP Nigel Lythgoe Tweeted, “Because of all the Drama in the #AmericanIdol green mile show we have been asked to cut the Beatles Vegas Challenge to 1 hour instead of 2!! #AmericanIdol on Wednesday is a 1 hour Beatle Challenge and then 1 hour of choosing the top 20 up until JLo breaks down and can’t continue!” and then added, “I truly hope #SYTYCD in Atlanta goes smoothly today I have to get back to #AmericanIdol in LA at the latest tonight!!? We have a great team.”
I wonder what happened that they didn’t like what went on in Vegas and the Top 20 selection shows that the two-day, four-hour episodes were cut down to one-day in two hours. What will they air on Thursday? A Glee repeat? Seriously I really want to know why they are making such a drastic change so close to air. Maybe 36 hours seem like a day and a half away, but to me it sounds like their are some internal problems with the Idol changes. Just me reading into something that probably doesn’t need to be read into…
Things that make me thankful about his Tweets, is it good to know that I am not the only one feeling this season…
Yesterday American Idol opened the show with a girl who did not make it to Hollywood and she told the cameras the reason why she didn’t advance was because her audition stunk…but not in the way we would normally think. I feel so bad that she was showcased like that because she will never ever live that down. Even people who had the crappiest (no pun intentions) auditions could hold their heads up higher than she will be able to. Poor Fart Girl…
So far to me American Idol has been a major snoozefest, but then yesterday there was a contestant who caught my attention and actually made me remember them. Courtney Penry will not be remembered for her voice, she will known for not being a chicken and revealing her true feelings for Ryan Seacrest. Let’s say how she feels about him is nothing to cluck about, but I am not sure if he feels the same way about that chick.
The good thing is she was sent to Hollywood, so hopefully we will see her again…and I have to wonder if after seeing that video package if Seacrest feels the same way?
Jennifer Lopez Tweeted the above picture and said, “On the set playin around with the boys ;-).” Looking at that photo, I had to wonder when did Ryan Seacrest get so tall because he looks like he is the tallest one there. I have seen in him person a few times and he just didn’t stand up as high as he is in that group photo when I saw him. Now when it comes to Steven Tyler, he is a like a freaking giant. So I really have to wonder if the American Idol host got in to Tom Cruise’s shoe closet?
First it was bad when American Idol let Paula Abdul leave the show, then it got even worse when they let Simon Cowell go too and then it got even more worse when they announced their replacements would be J-Lo and Steven Tyler. After they announced them as the new judges with the old Dog it seemed like things were on the up and up because they said were going back to the three judge format.
Well guess what, Nigel Lythgoe made my life so much easier today because he let TV Guide in on even more changes and I think they are so bad I now have my reason to stop watching the show.
Here is a list of changes that Mr Capped Teeth told TVG:
– The finalists will face new challenges, including contests to make the best music video, to promote themselves, and to work with a band and dancers for an awards show-style performance.
– The producers have also eliminated the round that shrinks the contestants from a group of 24 to 12, instead opting to just go straight to the top 12. “I didn’t think [the top 24] were very good, I was bored with them by the time they got there,” Lythgoe says of previous seasons. It’s unclear if this means the judges will choose the top 12 and what will replace the episodes that usually cover the early voting rounds. Both Fox and the producers declined to elaborate.
– As previously announced, theme weeks will focus on decades rather than a particular artist.
He went on to say that the show is focusing more on creating an artist than a winner. What and ever, it is a TV show and we really don’t give a sh!t what happens to the winner after the finale.
Could you imagine Clay Aiken or Chris Daughtry trying to do those awards show-style performances? Not everyone can do them and doesn’t mean they can’t be the American Idol.
Yes I hate the 24 too, but you know what it let’s us get to know the singers more before they reach that critical Top 12. You know you can’t judge the singers from just their auditions. Like TVG I want to know what they are going to do to replace those three to four weeks of broadcast. I also don’t like the decade theme weeks because if we do a new decade every week will be going back to the early 20th century before even Nigel was born. At least I think it was before he was born.
I seriously don’t understand why they are making all of these changes to show that was doing perfectly well without them. You would have thought after this summer’s disastrous ratings and feedback for SYTYCD because of all of the changes that Nigel implemented for the show, that someone would have taught him the expression, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Seriously Nigel how many shows does your ego have to f*ck up before you realize change isn’t always a good thing???
