Before Alicia Silverstone was dressed to the nines in Clueless, she was only wearing her underwear for Macy*s. How cute was the 7-year-old in that 1984 ad?
Back in the ’80s, the movie Valley Girl made girls all over the World want to be Valley Girls. They started to talk like the Moon Zappa song from the film and dress like Deborah Foreman’s character. It also helped to launch the career of some actor named Nicolas Cage. Ever heard of him?
On May 8th, 37 years after the original came out, Orion Pictures is releasing a remake on home video. This time around, Alicia Silverstone tells her daughter all about her rebellious teenage years.
Julie (Jessica Rothe) and her friends leave the Valley for Hollywood. While they are there, she meets bad boy Randy (Josh Whitehouse), and they fall in love. The rest is what most teenage based films in the ’80s were all about. It is the story of dads not wanting their good little daughters dating the bad boys.
There is one big difference with this remake, it is a musical. It will be told through the totally tubular tunes of the ’80s like a-ha’s Take On Me, and The Go-Go’s’ We Got the Beat.
I don’t know about you, but I like so cannot wait to see Valley Girl. The original movie is why I live in the Valley. I have like always like wanted to be one! Totally bitchin’ right? Just like this feature better be! Which it will be.
On Sunday night, Alicia Silverstone was ready to go ball, aka the Vanity Fair Oscar party, when, just like Cinderella, she was stuck getting on her knees cleaning the floor. Not because her evil stepsisters made a mess. Instead her evil dog peed on the floor.
When you are mom, you have to do what mom’s do. No one cares if you are wearing a one-of-a-kind Christian Siriano dress. If you do not do it, no one else will. That is when a small mess, turns into a big one because the puppy will step in the pee and get it all over the house. Now, your house smells like it and who wants to wash the floors after a long night of partying.

Jen Chaney wrote a book called As If!: The Oral History of Clueless, as Told by Amy Heckerling, the Cast, and the Crew, and she gave Vanity Fair excerpts from it. In one of the stories from the book that’s out next month, she revealed what other actresses were up for the iconic role.
Believe it or not, Alicia Silverstone was not the first choice for the role. Amy Heckerling wanted Alicia Witt, but Fox wanted her to explore all of the actresses. Some of those other actresses were Tiffani-Amber Theissen, Keri Rusell and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Angelina Jolie’s agent was pitching her hard to casting director, Carrie Frazier, but she knew she was wrong for the role. When Frazier got a script called Gia, she knew Mrs Brad Pitt was right for that role and thus launched her career.
Another person who was thought of for the role was Reese Witherspoon. Heckerling knew she was going to be a star, just not for her film because she wanted Witt to be her star.
So how did Silverstone get into the mix? Heckerling saw her in an Aerosmith video and thought she would be perfect for it. Frazier saw a movie called The Crush and thought that actress would be perfect for it. Frazier told Hecklerling to see the movie, but Amy was insistent she wanted the Aerosmith girl. Turns out they both were talking about the same person. Thus, Cher Horowitz was born.
I can’t imagine anyone other than Silverstone playing the role. After seeing who else was up for the role, I am glad we don’t have to imagine anyone else.
I wonder if any of those actresses are going to read the book and be like I could’ve be Clueless? How would their careers have turned out differently? I can’t even ponder that. Actually, it really hurts the head picturing Russell or Paltrow as Cher.
Who do you think is the biggest Monet on that list?
