Every Thanksgiving, I watch the WKRP in Cincinnati episode Turkey’s Away because it is the best holiday episode ever created for television.
If you have never seen the episode (sacrilege), this is what happens. Mr. Carlson has the bright idea to throw live turkeys out of a helicopter onto an outdoor mall so that shoppers can go home with a free turkey for their Thanksgiving feast.
Why did he do this? He tells his staff, “As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.” As we know, they cannot.
Therefore, they come plummeting down to their deaths as the bystanders run for their lives. Les Nessman, WKRP’s news anchor, was there to report on the horror of it all as turkeys come crashing down onto the pavement and cars.
While we heard all about it back at the radio station as the staff listened in shock and dismay to Les Nessman’s reporting, we did not see the Turkey Drop.
Now, 47 years later, thanks to The Maitrix, we are finally getting to see what Les Nessman and the unsuspecting shoppers saw on that fateful day. And now we know why he said, “This is terrible. Oh, the humanity!” Because it is terrible, worse than we thought it could be. And I love it!
I hate AI, but I approve of this! This is what it should be used for.
Seriously, screw Friends, WKRP will always be the GOAT of Thanksgiving episodes! Then Kenan & Kel and How I Met Your Mother in that order. What is your favorite Turkey Day episode?
Back to the video. As it started to play, I was like, “This video reminds me of the WKRP episode,” and lo and behold, that is what it was!
