Last week, CBS announced their 2026-2027 season schedule, and Matlock was not on the Fall lineup. So, I, like many others, was questioning their decision.

Today, TV Insider spoke with the show’s creator, Jennie Snyder Urman, and she told the site that it was her decision to hold the show until the midseason.

Why? On Thursday, during the season finale, the Wellbrexa mystery will come to a conclusion, and next season, Matlock (Kathy Bates) and the team will take on a new mystery. However, the writers need time to map it out, so she asked her bosses for some extra time to figure it all out.

“[It’s a] big reset, so we have an extra long writer’s room before we go to camera, and I really want to do it right,” Urman told TV Insider. “The quality is everything to me.”

Personally, I am happy they are getting rid of the Wellbrexa storyline because it has been bringing the series down. I wish it were more of a legal procedural. But I also know Urman is really good at creating novella-type storylines, like she did on Jane the Virgin.
