R.L. Stine’s Fear Street franchise is finally back with a new movie on Netflix, and it lives up to the first word in its name.
Fear Street: Prom Queen throws it back to the ’80s slasher movies that were more fun than scary with their kills. So it is a good thing that it takes place in 1988.
Not just any time of that year, but prom night in Shadyville, a town that is way too familiar with death. There are six girls gunning for Prom Queen. But one by one, they go missing. Well, not missing, they are getting murdered.
There is the outcast Lori Granger (India Fowler). She is a long shot, but is not stopping her from running, and her best friend, Megan (Suzanna Son), is going to support her. Just like she does when their classmates make fun of Lori because her mom was accused of killing her dad when he rejected her and her pregnancy, but she claims she is innocent. Does killing run in Lori’s blood?
Tiffany Falconer (Fina Strazza) is the school bitch. Everyone wants to kill her because again, she is the school bitch. But is she also the school murderer?
Then there is Tiffany’s lap dog, Melissa (Ella Rubi). Is she sick of living in her BFF’s shadow and thinks that winning will change everything?
Debbie (Rebecca Ablack) is their friend, but is also invisible. Is this her way of finally getting seen?
Linda (Ilan O’Driscoll) seems to be nice and sweet, but is she the opposite?
Finally, there is Christy (Ariana Greenblatt), the school bad girl. Murderous bad?
One of those Prom Queen wannabes won’t make it to the prom because she will be murdered by a cleaver-swinging person wearing a red leather full-body cape and a black scary mask.
After her dead body lies in the street, it is time for the prom and the killings to start. One by one, the nominees and their dates have their final dance until someone is finally named Prom Queen. And then it is time for the mass murdering to begin, giving Carrie’s prom a run for its money.
The best kill comes from a victim who has both their hands chopped off and tries to escape the killer by opening the door with their bloody stubs. That is something that is not possible, so don’t feel bad laughing. I didn’t.
The kills are creative and original, and like I said, very ’80s.
What is also very ’80s soundtrack, you will hear songs from Duran Duran, Roxette, and Melle Mel, to name a few.
You don’t want to turn down a date with Fear Street: Prom Queen! I have to admit, you will not be able to Netflix & Chill with it because it is not a chill movie. It is a Horror movie, after all. But you will have a fun night watching it. And these days, that is all we can ask for.
You can watch Fear Street: 1994, Fear Street: 1978, and Fear Street: 1666. Every one of the Fear Street movies is enjoyable to watch. But I have to admit that Prom Queen is my favorite one so far. You say, it takes the crown!
