Back in 1985, the world was involved in a Cold War with Russia. We were all afraid of them dropping the bomb. That year, Sting released a song called Russians as a plea that we would never get the thing that would end all wars.
That was then, and the Cold War finally ended. However, in the last week, Russia attacked Ukraine and is bringing us closer to that reality.
So, today he took the spider webs off of the tune he never thought would be relevant again and is singing it because, unfortunately, it is.
Sting is not only singing it because it is relevant again as he implores that Russia ends its unprovoked attack. He also wants to get the word out about a charity that is assisting displaced Ukrainians.
The singer is asking you to donate to Help Ukraine. He says, “The supplies shipped to this warehouse in Poland are delivered in coordination with the Armed Forces of Ukraine and are guaranteed to go to people most in need.”
