The new Bond movie set is smoking |
July 30th, 2006 under James Bond. [ Comments: none ]

A blaze erupted Sunday on the set of the latest James Bond movie west of London, but no injuries were reported, fire officials said. The fire broke out just before 11:30 a.m. at Pinewood Studios, about 19 miles west of London, Buckinghamshire Fire Brigade said.Eight fire engines were called to the set, officials said. Television footage showed plumes of smoke rising from the building, with the roof of the "Casino Royale" set charred and caved in. "It is just a complete mess," said Fraser Pearson, spokesman for the Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. "I would say the whole building has been damaged by the fire. It is still smoking quite badly. There has definitely been a large blaze here." The vast stage had been transformed into a replica of Venice, Italy, where part of the film is set. "Casino Royale," due for release in October, will be the first film featuring actor Daniel Craig as agent 007.

Heather Mills counters Macca’s divorce claims |
July 29th, 2006 under Paul McCartney/Heather Mills. [ Comments: none ]

The divorce of Paul McCartney and his wife, Heather, is unlikely to go as smoothly as the former Beatle is hoping, according to press reports. The couple have insisted they want the break-up to be amicable as possible, stressing that their chief concern is their daughter, Beatrice, two. But a spokeswoman for Heather McCartney said she would file claims against Paul after he described her as ‘argumentative’ and ‘rude to staff’.’Heather’s going to be filing her own counter-claims both in this country and America,’ her spokeswoman said. There have been suggestions Sir Paul might use recent allegations about his wife’s past – that she appeared in pornographic pictures and worked as high class escort girl – to reduce her pay-off.

SYTYCD’s Benji Schwimmer profiled |
July 29th, 2006 under SYTYCD. [ Comments: none ]

Not only does Benji Schwimmer think that he can dance. So does America. The 22-year-old Redlands man is a finalist on the nationally broadcast Fox television program "So You Think You Can Dance." Whether it’s the waltz, jazz, hip-hop or mastering the mambo, Schwimmer has been dazzling the judges. He also has remained enough of a fan favorite to stay alive in the competition that borrows from the "American Idol" format of relying on viewers’ votes."Somebody in the audience held up a sign that read ‘I.E. Pride,’ " Schwimmer said in a telephone interview this week. "I was jumping up and down. I gotta represent the 9-oh-9 and the 9-5-1." Schwimmer started dancing at age 3 and now specializes in West Coast swing, just like his father, Buddy "The King of Swing" Schwimmer.Buddy and Laurie Schwimmer, Benji’s mother, teach West Coast swing at their 5678 Dance Studio in Redlands. Benji Schwimmer is so good at swing dancing that he once earned an invite to teach Kathie Lee Gifford, former co-host of the ABC morning talk show "Live With Regis and Kathie Lee."On "So You Think You Can Dance," Schwimmer is the one with the smile from here to Santa Monica. He pulled off a mambo routine with long-time partner and cousin, Heidi Groskreutz, 24, that wowed the judges. It started with a doughnut drop that resembled a man weightlifting, with Groskreutz representing the weights. "Magnificent!" said a beaming Nigel Lythgoe, the judge with the British accent. Lythgoe said the Schwimmer-Groskreutz performance was an example of why the Fox show received almost 8 million viewers the previous week. He also called it the best performance of the night.Choreographer and judge Mary Murphy criticized the couple in jest, saying that the number didn’t have enough spins. She said she counted 98 spin moves — but it should have had 100. Then she said: "No (other) two dancers on this show could have done that number."And judge Dan Karaty called the two the most refined dancers."This is the most professional routine," Karaty said after the mambo. "You leave nothing to criticize." Schwimmer, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who served at a Mexican orphanage for two years while on his mission, said he is humbled by the praise."More than anything, whatever I’ve achieved is given to me by the man upstairs," Schwimmer said.Buddy Schwimmer said he believes his son can win it all.He said he was scheduled to be a choreographer for the program but told Lythgoe that his son was trying out and he worried that there could be a conflict of interest.Lythgoe said that there shouldn’t be a problem and noted that the show is drawing thousands of tryouts, Schwimmer said."I told him, ‘You don’t know my son.’ "Sure enough, Benji made the cut, and the elder Schwimmer had to back away from the choreography commitment. Even more so than all his son’s dance moves, Buddy Schwimmer said he is proud of his son for something else. "He’s out there having a good time," Schwimmer said. "He makes the people have a good time, and that’s the important thing. They all enjoy him as a person."

I did not know that his dad could’ve been one of the choreographers on the show. I guess he will do SYTYCD 3. In the meantime, go Benji!

Rock Star Supernova’s Patrice Pike profiled |
July 29th, 2006 under Rock Star: Supernova. [ Comments: none ]
|
Patrice Pike was not going to be intimidated byHollywood hotshot guitarist Dave Navarro. The Austin singer, who once fronted Sister 7 and currently performs as a solo artist, has been in sink-or-swim meetings with legendary label boss Clive Davis. She’s been signed to three major labels in the years since she fronted Dallas funk/jam band Little Sister as a teenager. Where her career is concerned, Pike’s not going to back down from someone whose biggest claim to fame is marrying (and recently separating from) Carmen Electra."OK, Patrice, I’m not seeing anything different and, frankly, I’m getting a little bored," Navarro told Pike on Tuesday night’s episode of "Rock Star: Supernova," which is "American Idol" with a pierced lip. Pike had just performed a version of "Remedy" by the Black Crowes."Do you do a lot of things differently when you perform, Dave?" Pike shot back. Ooh, testy. Some in the crowd gasped. But then Navarro, who’s one of the show’s executive producers as well as a co-host, put it all into perspective: "The difference is that I already have a job and I’m not auditioning."I don’t think there are too many musicians out there who wouldn’t want to perform in front of five million people a week on national TV," Pike said after surviving Week Four’s elimination, which aired Wednesday. For the first time, Pike found herself as one of the bottom three vote-getters and thus had to sing for her "Rock Star" life. And did she ever! Pike pulled out a riveting performance of Radiohead’s "My Iron Lung" that had Lee exclaiming, "That’s what I’m talking about!" In two minutes, Pike went from the bottom to the top.Still, Pike has virtually no chance of fronting the Supernova band-to-be. She’ll ride this rockin’ rollercoaster as long as she can, hopefully to the round where the contestants sing their own compositions.Tell Pike that she just doesn’t fit with this over-the-hill, bad boy rock band and she’ll disagree. "I’d love to be in this band," she said. "I’ve been chilling for two years with my solo stuff. I miss being in a rock band. I’m ready to cut loose." Expect Supernova to cut Pike loose around Week Eight. And if you think it’ll bum her out to read that, don’t worry. Pike and her fellow "Rock Star: Supernova" hopefuls are holed up like a deliberating jury, with no phones, no TV, no Internet access and no newspapers. Pike has a list of five people she can call, twice a week, for 15 minutes, on a monitored cellphone. They can’t talk about the show or any aspects of the music business. There’s no coaching in "Rock Star.""Don’t tell me anything about what’s happening on the outside world," Pike prepped a reporter on Monday, interview day, at the converted convent in the Hollywood Hills where the contestants live together. Pike has no idea that "Patrice Watch" parties have become a regular Tuesday night happening in her home town. During a recent lunch hour at Enoteca on South Congress Avenue, strangers at adjoining tables were debating Pike’s chances after overhearing a conversation. "Who’s the girl who told Tommy to Google her?" asked one diner. Told it was Storm Large, who’s got naughty pics on the Internet, the woman said, "I think she’ll go all the way. There’s chemistry with her and the band." The show’s addictive."Probably the worst thing about this experience is the isolation," said Pike, who nailed the cattle call tryout in April, then spent a long week auditioning in L.A. before making the on-air cut. She gets paid each week, but business partner Todd Young declined to say how much. Pike has had to put her solo career on hold, postponing a European tour and pushing back the release date of her new record until "Rock Star" wraps in late September. Or until she’s sent home."I really want to win this thing, and I think I’ve got a chance," she said. "I’m just so comfortable onstage. I don’t get the jitters." "Everybody gets along so well in the house," she said. "We have a lot of respect for each other, knowing just what we had to do to get here." But what about that Week 3 dustup with Jill Giola, termed a "catfight" by Tommy Lee? "They made a big deal about that on the show, but it was really nothing," Pike said. The cameras caught her and Giola in a heated moment after Pike claimed "Helter Skelter" by the Beatles as her song to perform that night. "It was just a misunderstanding. Jill wanted to do another song anyway." It was all patched up by show time, and Pike and Giola were sitting together holding hands."I have to challenge myself to pull out that over-the-top stage presence they’re looking for," she said.
