Last month, it was revealed that Cosby Show actor Geoffrey Owens was working at Trader Joe’s to make ends meet while he waited for his next acting job. What seemed like a negative, turned into a positive when Tyler Perry offered him a job on The Have and The Have Nots.
The actor just started working on the OWN drama and Good Morning America caught up with them. Perry decided to write Owens in as a senator for 11 episodes. Then when he saw him in costume, “I had 20,000 more ideas running in my head for him.”
Both men are in awe of each other. Owens has this to say about his boss, “I’m really proud and excited to be part of his world, basically. He’s so inspiring.” Perry told the reporter that Owens is teaching him. Then he explained, “He teaches this stuff, so I am watching him. His subtleties. His moments. His nuances. The things that he is doing like wow that is really good.”
Weeks have passed since Owens was shamed for making an honest living, what is his takeaway from it all? He says, “Maybe this is the cause that’s actually going to bridge the divide in our country. Maybe this is it. This is the way that we come together.” I hope so. I also hope that Owens keeps on working because he is a bright spot in whatever role he takes on.
