KTLA’s Wendy Burch was sent to cover the Hermosa Beach Ironman competition and she probably thought it would be as easy as a day at the beach. She was wrong, very wrong.
Basically, they run a mile on the beach, paddle a mile in the ocean and then drink a 6-pack of beer. What could possibly go wrong? Well, what happens if you do a lot of intense exercise and then drink beer? Yep, some people throw it up. That is exactly what happened and Burch found herself in a lurch when she found herself covered in it. Thankfully, there was an ocean nearby that she could run into and clean herself up in. Otherwise, it would have been a long ride back to the station.
BTW too bad they cut the liveshot short because I wanted to see if they were going to have a Stand By Me Pie Eating Contest moment. You know the one!
UPDATE: Wendy Burch shared her story with Huffington Post and she explained what happened. The news reporter thought she picked a safe person to interview, but what she did not know, “is that he had a bullseye drawn on his back with the words ‘puke here’ written in magic marker.” Someone read that and shot for the bullseye because why not.
To make matters even worse for her is that she did not know about the freeze frame glitch and kept interviewing people on the beach for the next two minutes. Sadly, there was no Stand By Me repeat. Also sadly for her, she drove home like that and did not shower until she got there.
Poor Wendy, I truly feel bad for her. Reporting is a tough job and we need to respect them for doing it on a daily basis.
