Just a week after David Letterman announced that he was retiring from The Late Show, CBS announced today that Stephen Colbert will be replacing him as host of the CBS late night show. The Comedy Central host will take over for Dave when he vacates his position. Who will take over for him on Comedy Central is yet to be determined.
Colbert had this to say about his new job, “Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career.†Then he added, “I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead.†And he concluded the thought by proving why he is a good choice for the job, “I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.â€
How much of the Late Show will be like Colbert Report and how much will be like Letterman’s is unknown at this time, but I am sure it will be a good mix of both.
Now when it comes to the two Jimmys, they definitely have some new competition to be worried about. He is going to make things at 11:35p a lot more interesting.
Good luck to him!
UPDATE: Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibberd Tweeted this new information about Colbert’s Comedy Central staff, “I’m told Stephen told his Colbert Report staff this morning, and they’re all coming to Late Show”
UPDATE 2: Jimmy Fallon Tweeted this about his upcoming competition, “I’d like to welcome the great @StephenAtHome to network late night and also congratulate him on his new name: Jimmy Colbert.”
