James Gunn’s Superman is getting a dog, and Krypto is going to be a lot like his own rescue, Ozu.

Ozu was adopted around the same time that Gunn started writing Clark Kent’s story, and the little terror was making his life interesting and inspiring his writing.

“Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him,” Gunn wrote. “I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life.”

The Head of the DC Universe has chosen now to make the announcement because it is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. And you never know how that pup is going to change your life. But the one thing we do know is that it will change your life for the better.

And on that note, Ozu is a much better behaved dog!

Superman flies into theaters on Jully 11th.
