One of the things I love most about Speechless, is not only the humor, but that they hired Micah Fowler, an actor, with Cerebral Palsy to play a character who has it. While a lot of shows would use an actor who does not have the disability, the ABC sitcom did not do that. Because of that casting, the program is helping to normalize the disorder and educate the viewers what it is like living with a family member who has it. Not only that it shows us that you can live a pretty normal life with CP.
Don’t take my word for it, United Cerebral Palsy of Los Angeles also believes it. That is why on March 11th, they are going to Fowler, who plays JJ Dimeo on the comedy. Fowler will be presented with the Trailblazer Award during UCPLA’s fourth annual Art of Care celebration.
Fowler is not only educating people on the small screen, he also does it when the camera is not on him. That is why I think he truly deserves this honor and hopefully he will get many more.
One of the ways to make that happen is to watch Speechless every Wednesday at 8:30p, so ABC will renew for another season. Plus, it really is a funny show with an important message.
