It is rare that a show lives up to the hype, but that is exactly what Smash does. The most buzzed about show in ages debuts on NBC tonight at 10p and you are going to see why everyone who sees it loves it.
Julia Houston (Debra Messing) is taking a break from writing Broadway musicals to adopt a baby girl with her husband. Then one day while her co-writer Tom Levitt (Christian Borle) and her are hanging out, his assistant suggests that they do a musical about Marilyn Monroe. Her break is over and they write a song for the prospective show. The video goes viral and now they are working on the full show which doesn’t please her husband.
Eileen Rand (Anjelica Huston) is a Broadway producer who is getting a divorce and she decides to screw him and invest in Marilyn. She brings along one the toughest and greatest directors in town, Derek Wills (Jack Davenport) who has a bitter history with Tom. Tom doesn’t want him on board, but once he and Julia see what he can do, they decide to make it somehow work.
Now it is time for the auditions. The writers want their friend Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty) for the role of Marilyn, but Derek wants a star. In walks a young woman from Iowa named Karen Cartwright (Katharine McPhee), she might be green but she has it. Now the two women are going to battle it for the title role and only one will walk away with it.
Ever since I saw the pilot over the summer, I have told everyone and anyone that they have to watch this show. For months I have been singing the praises of Smash and I am so happy that tonight you will get to experience what I did. You will be talking about this show that leaves you belting out your happiness.
To give you a hint how wonderful this show is, I hated Katharine McPhee on American Idol but I found myself rooting for her on this show.
Smash is real. Smash is raw. Smash is fabulous. Smash is everything you want from a show and more. Smash is a Smash!!!
