July 13th, 2010 under Obits

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner passed away today at the age 80 after suffering a massive heart attack. He had been the owner of the winningest team in baseball since 1973. According to the Yankees, “Steinbrenner’s ownership of the Yankees spanned six championships, 10 American League pennants and a pair of dynasties, one of which – the team’s run of two World Series victories and three appearances from 1977-1981 – is remembered as one of baseball’s most controversial clubhouses and has been called “The Bronx Zoo” era.” What an amazing reign for the man who was the longest tenured owner in Major League Baseball.
Thankfully he lived long enough to see the new Yankees Stadium be named after him and better yet he saw he boys win the World Series there in their inaugural year there in October. He will live on via the stadium and the amazing legacy he left behind with all those World Series pennants.
As a girl who was born and raised in The Bronx, his death really saddens me because you can’t grow up in NYC without being a Yankees fan.
Steinbrenner is the second legendary NY Yankee to die this week, long time announcer Bob Sheppard passed away on Sunday at the age of 99. As my cousin said, “You think George was waiting for Bob to go first so there’d be someone there to properly announce his arrival?” If that was the case, what a way to be introduced into heaven.
