On February 6th at 10p the most praised new show of season is making its debut on NBC and you are going to see why everyone loves this show. Smash is about the making of a Broadway play and the inspiration of choice is the legendary Marilyn Monroe. But the beautiful blonde bombshell was not their first choice.
Executive Producers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who brought Hairspray and Catch Me If You Can to Broadway, wanted to do reinvent another movie as a musical for the show, but that idea was negated. Then another EP Theresa Rebec,k who has plenty of dramatic shows on her resume, wanted to go with what she studied in school. She told us at the NBC Winter Press Tour Day, “I actually have a PhD in Victorian literature and so I know all these, like, Victorian novels that would make great musicals or, you know, I had a lot of ideas about feathers and sword fights because I also thought it would be cool to see, like, art people, like, doing, you know like, doing costumes and being contemporary. You know what I mean? I like that stuff.” That idea was turned down because Wittman said, “I don’t do feathers.” Which I am so happy he killed because I don’t think the show would be as appealing for television as it is had they gone with that. So then they thought as Wittman exclaimed, “They want sex and singing, sex and singing.” With that Rebeck concluded, “And so somehow between those two poles, we wound up Marilyn.” She is so the perfect choice because women want to be her and men want to do/be her and that means everyone can relate with screen siren. They will want to watch a show that is about the making of her. We know her story, so let’s see they make that fairytale a reality we can all sing about.
While Smash won’t make its official television debut until February 6th, you will be able to catch the first episode on the internet. On January 16th you will be able to see it streamed on all of NBC’s digital download partners, including iTunes, Amazon, Xbox, PlayStation, Voodoo and Samsung Media Hub. It will also be available on NBC OnDemand on that day. Then a week later it will start streaming online via NBC.com and Hulu up until the premiere. So if you can’t wait until the premiere, you can catch the most buzzed show that way and I highly suggest you do because you will want to watch it more than once, heck you will want to watch it more than ten times. I lost count how many times I have seen it a while ago.
