“Were the World Mine†tells the story of Timothy: a bullied gay student at an all-boy private high school struggling to fit in with his peers while helping his mother accept his sexuality. Things seem all the makings of a Shakespearian tragedy for Timothy until the school play is announced by his mystical, bohemian English teacher, Ms. Tebbit (Wendy Robie, Twin Peaks). Timothy is cast as “Puck†in the school’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,†allowing him to get closer to his crush Jonathan, a straight jock, who is cast as one of the play’s lead roles. As an escape from the cruel realities of high school, Timothy transcends into a world of song and spectacle. However, Timothy’s life crosses the boundaries of reality and fantasy when he follows a “Cupid’s love†potion in his script and quickly discovers that anyone sprayed by this mystical potion falls in love with the first person of the same sex they see. Before long, the streets in Timothy’s homophobic town are inundated with lovelorn gay and lesbian couples, creating mayhem amongst his friends, family and neighbors. Both the town and Timothy learn a lesson in tolerance and ultimate acceptance as Timothy tries to repair the mischief he unleashed.
Were the World Mine premieres tonight at 9p on Logo and you don’t need a flower with a magical potion to convince you to watch this movie. The musical is a re-imagination of the William Shakespeare classic A Midsummer’s Night Dream and for the first time I enjoyed the story. I think a big reason why I loved it so much is the wonderful acting by the cast and the beautiful songs. Tanner Cohen plays Timothy and he has a voice that even the faeries would be jealous of. The musical numbers make you want to run out and buy the soundtrack because you are going to want to listen to them over and over again! Putting the music aside, the movie also tells the sweet love stories between a mom and her son, a boy and his friends, a boy and his crush and the whole town in love with each other!
So when you come home tonight sad that the summer has come to an end, put on Logo at 9p and watch Were the World Mine to put a smile on your face again!
