NBC announced today that it picked up
Days of our Lives for a 55th season aka through the 2019-2020 season.
Just like Stefano DiMera, this soap opera constantly rises from the dead over and over again. Just when it looks like NBC is ready to pull the plug, it miraculously comes back to life and does better than expectations. For example, the daytime drama was up 4% last season while its biggest competition is down in the ratings. Impressive for a show that is older than most of us.
How old? They aired their 13,500th episode in 2018. That is a lot of weddings, divorces, babies, deaths, murders, affairs, tears, illness, people coming back from the dead, demonic possessions, love triangles, questionable paternities and unknown family members to write about. Yet, they still find a way to do it and make it entertaining. If they didn’t, then we would still not be watching the show for 53 years and counting.
The show about the Bradys, the Hortons and the DiMeras living in Salem turns 54 in November and it does not look a day over 25! But then again, in soap years, you age rapidly until you are out of college and then time slows down to almost a crawl. Am I right?
