August 13th, 2026 under Green Day

Green Day has been around for almost 40 years, so Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool have released a lot of songs. Unless you are a member of Idiot Nation, you will not know the meaning of their tunes, how they got the band got their name, and did they start out as Green Day?

So the trio sat down with Wired to Answer The Web’s Most Searched Questions, and we got to learn more about them.

A lot of people were introduced to the band when their song Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) closed out the series finale of Seinfeld. So is the tune about nothing, like the sitcom? Nope. It was Armstrong writing about his broken heart because his girlfriend left him for Ecuador. Boy, did she make the mistake of her life leaving him.

As I mentioned, the band’s fans are known as the Idiot Nation because of their album and the single American Idiot. Who was it about then? George W. Bush and the Iraq War. Today, obviously, it is about trump and the MAGA cult members.

As we have heard, they have changed up the lyrics to American Idiot to represent today’s Idiots. However, there is one song Billie Joe rewrote on his own. What song is it? Basket Case. He originally wrote it when he was on some substances. But that was then, so he changed it with the different or lack of substances in his system.

They will talk about what the meaning of most of their songs are, but don’t ask the singer about When I Come Around because he won’t come around to you if you do.

Did you know they originally called themselves Sweet Children? But there was another band in Northern California who went by Sweet Baby Jesus. So they knew they had to change it.

How did they come with Green Day? They have a song called Green Day, which was inspired by Siouxsie and the Banshees’ version of Dear Prudence. And there was someone who worked at UCSF’s radio station who liked that song. Therefore, when she saw them the day before they recorded their first 7″ record, she told them they should call themselves that. And they did.

And the rest is what happened after they walked down the Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

Talking about broken dreams, do they play weddings? Yes. It is something they know well because there have been seven weddings between them. Armstrong has only been married once, and it has been since 1994.

Finally, do they support AI? Yes, but only if A.I. stands for American Idiot! However, the other AI, they don’t. Because as Cool puts it, “AI can’t throw a television out a hotel room window.”

Oh wait, one more thing! Go see their movie Nimrods in theaters tomorrow. It is the Odyssey of Rock movies this year!

Signed, a new member of the Idiot Nation!
