From the outside, celebrities seem to have it all. Beautiful, rich, always invited to glamourous parties; you would think they’d have prospective partners falling at their feet. But sadly it isn’t always the case. For every couple who have made a life together – like Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson who recently celebrated 30 years of marriage – there are those who have either never settled down, or ploughed through partners at a rate of knots: this week Nicolas Cage was caught on video applying for his 4th marriage licence in Las Vegas! In this article we’re going to look at some of those famous people who have somehow stayed single.
Al Pacino
Despite being one of the most successful actors of all times, with Emmys, Tonys and even an Oscar sitting in his cabinet at home, Pacino has never bagged himself a bride. A notorious bachelor, he has had several high profile romances throughout his 40-year career including with his Godfather co-star Diane Keaton, and has three children from these relationships. He broke up with the mother of his twins in 2003 and has only recently found someone else to share his house with.
People have pointed the finger at Pacino’s own upbringing as a reason for his refusal to wed. His father walked out on the family when he was young, leaving the family to move back in with his grandparents. Having seen the effects of this first hand, Pacino may understandably be wary of getting into a bad marriage.
Leonardo DiCaprio
Another famous bachelor, DiCaprio has always had the reputation in Hollywood of being a bit of a playboy and a partier. His list of previous partners is long and not particularly varied: the women in question are all models and significantly younger than him. I guess they would have to be to keep up with his hedonistic lifestyle!
DiCaprio himself has gone on record blaming his work load and often busy shooting schedule for his difficulties in finding that special someone, yet he seems to find enough time to indulge in his favourite hobbies, including playing poker tournaments.
Tobey Maguire
Childhood friend of DiCaprio, and another infamous celebrity poker player, Tobey Maguire found himself back on the market in 2016 after his nine-year marriage to Jennifer Meyer ended. Maguire made a name for himself in the movies of 1990s/2000s including Spiderman and The Cider House Rules, but he never hit the dizzying heights of fame that some of his friends did. With less work pressures, Maguire certainly had the time to put more of an effort into his personal life, so perhaps there is another reason why is seemingly happy-ever-after came to an end?
Maguire was famously caught up in the scandal surrounding the publication, and subsequent film adaptation, of the book Molly’s Game – an expose of the underground poker scene in Hollywood run by Molly Bloom. Maguire was already well-known at the tables in Vegas, but Bloom’s account of him paints a less-than-flattering picture, describing him as a ‘great player, but a sore loser’. You can imagine the amounts of money flying around the table at games stocked with Hollywood superstars, but that’s no excuse to lose your manners. Perhaps he should take some dating tips for poker players before wading back into the field?
Diane Keaton
Keaton has already been mentioned as an on-again, off-again paramour of Al Pacino, but he is not the only high-profile celebrity in her dating history. An acting powerhouse in her own right, during the heydays of her career she was also seen with Woody Allen and Warren Beatty on her arm. But she has steadfastly refused to get married, claiming that she just doesn’t want to commit to the compromises necessary to make a marriage work.
Her outspoken stance and happiness with her own company has been inspirational to many women who want to shake off the idea that you need a man to be happy. She has also inspired a number of other famous faces to go on record stating they are happy living by themselves, including Jodie Forster and Sex and the City’s Kristin Davies.
Taylor Swift
It wouldn’t be a list of serial celebrity daters without mentioning singer/songwriter Taylor Swift. Her love life gets as much publicity as her music, with a string of high-profile exs including John Mayer, Tom Hiddleston and Calvin Harris – who is the only public boyfriend to have lasted more than a few months. So what could be putting the break on these promising relationships? Well, Swift isn’t shy about the fact that her boyfriends are frequently the inspiration for her songs, with some of her most famous singles to date clearly referencing her past loves. And not all the songs cast them in a flattering light. Putting all the details of a fledgling romance into such a public sphere is clearly not the best way to keep the relationship going. Although Swift has been in a relationship with English actor Joe Alwyn for a while now, maybe she has learned that some things are best not set to music?
Conclusion
It seems that celebrities, for all their fame and fortunes, can fall foul of making the same mistakes in relationships as everyone else. Money can’t buy you love, putting the time and effort into someone is still the most important thing for happiness.
