Right before
WABC in NYC went live at 11p there was a fire on the news set. As they were preparing to go live they heard a loud pop and then they started to see a fire start behind the anchors. A stage manager described the scene, "We noticed a flame of about 4 to 5-feet high. We alerted everybody that there was fire. And within 30 seconds, it had gone right up to the ceiling and started curving over the roof." And this is how a cameraman described it, "As soon as and we said we got a fire going, all of the sudden, it went boom and the whole thing, I looked at the back of the set, there must have been 10 to 15-foot flames flying up to the ceiling." Luckily no one was injured in the fire.
WABC was off the air for two airs after the fire. WABC was back doing their live newscast this morning except instead of doing it from the set they are doing it from their newsroom.
What WABC does not mention is that they share their set with Live with Regis and Kelly. WABC has half and they have the other. No word how their set is doing, but I am sure we will find out tomorrow when they are back live.
