Boston NBC’s affil says no to Jay Leno
April 3rd, 2009 under Talk Shows. [ Comments: none ]

A few months ago, NBC announced that they were keeping Jay Leno and moving the show to 10p. Well now the NBC affiliate in Leno’s hometown of Boston, WHDH told NBC thanks, but no thanks. Instead WHDH has decided to air an hour of news instead of Leno.
Well let’s just say that NBC isn’t that happy about their plans according to the Boston Herald.

“WHDH’s move is a flagrant violation of the terms of their contract with NBC,” said John Eck, president of the NBC TV Network. “If they persist, we will strip WHDH of its NBC affiliation. We have a number of other strong options in the Boston market, including using our existing broadcast license to launch an NBC-owned and operated station.”
Rick Cotton, NBC Universal’s general counsel, said “it is clear that WHDH is contractually required to air NBC programming as scheduled by the network.”

That is messed up of NBC. They have been pretty much putting on crappy programming for the last few years and they have dropped to 4th place in the overall ratings for the TV season. So it is no surprise that the NBC affiliates aren’t happy with the fact they moved Leno, who averages a much smaller audience than most of the shows that currently air in the 10p slot, into primetime. Affiliates need strong programming at 10p to lead into their newscasts where they make money in advertising and I really don’t Leno can do that. While Leno did great at 11:35p, 10p is a whole different ballgame that I doubt he will be able to have the same effect in. I respect WHDH for taking a stand against something that is probably going to hurt them big time.

The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet is cancelled!
January 8th, 2009 under Talk Shows. [ Comments: 38 ]

Fox has decided not renew The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet according to MediaWeek. Instead they are replacing the show with Spaghetti Cat…joking! Seriously how much better would that be? Who was watching the show, it was so bad. I was shocked they picked it up for second season and stayed with it as long as they did.
The show will say goodbye sometime this summer, no word if Spaghetti Cat will make an appearance before the show ends

Jimmy Kimmel showered with Jay Leno for no reason
December 10th, 2008 under Jimmy Kimmel, Talk Shows. [ Comments: none ]

For about a year now Jimmy Kimmel has been trying to convince to Jay Leno not to come to ABC and yesterday all that convincing he has been doing worked because Jay announced that he was staying with NBC. In fact Jay also admitted that a disgruntled employee started the ABC rumors…Leno was that employee. Well now that Jimmy Kimmel Live! is safe, Jimmy Kimmel came clean about the great lengths he went to not to get his frenemy to work at the same network as he does. Did anyone else picture the two of them luffaing each other?

UPDATE: I don’t want to do another post about Jay Leno’s new show, so I going to post these great quotes from some really talented show executive producers about the 5 less hours dedicated to scripted television on NBC from The Hollywood Reporter.

“As entertaining as Jay is, I think it’s too bad that NBC is making choices primarily from a financial consideration vs. putting on the best possible work,” said panel moderator Peter Tolan, co-creator/executive producer of FX’s “Rescue Me.”
He and Chuck Lorre, co-creator/executive producer of CBS’ “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory,” asked, “Is NBC considered the Big Four anymore?”
Al Jean, the executive producer of Fox’s “The Simpsons,” joked that NBC could further enhance its standing by bringing back late talk-show maven Johnny Carson and giving him the 9 p.m. hour.

I think Al Jean gave NBC an idea, I bet they are trying to figure out how Heroes’ Suresh could give Johnny Carson a blood transfusion of Claire’s blood. Or maybe they will try to get Hiro to go back in time and stop Carson from smoking his first cigarette? Oh wait if Hiro does that we would have never had that classic moment between Don Rickles and Johnny Carson when Rickles broke his cigarette box.

Jay Leno moving to 10p on NBC

NBC has time and time again said that it was letting Jay Leno go when his contract ends in May of '09 as earlier announced. But now that the network can't catch a break with any of their programming they are reportedly keeping Jay Leno on and making him a primetime man according to The New York Times.
The offer of a new weeknight show for Mr. Leno at 10 p.m., an idea that NBC executives said Monday came from the NBC chief executive, Jeff Zucker, not only allows NBC to retain Mr. Leno’s services, but also means the network may be able to greatly reduce costs of developing and producing other prime-time shows.
This will be a TV first to have a talk show air 5 days a week during the primetime hours.
So that means NBC will have Leno at 10p, Conan O'Brien at 11:34p, Jimmy Fallon at 12:37a and Carson Daly at 1:36a. That is a lot of talk and a lot of hope that there are that many guests to book to fill all those hours of talk. It will be interesting to see how he does.
Personally I think this is a desperate decision by Jeff Zucker. Can someone please explain to me why he is still running NBC, how much lower does the once number 1 network have to sink before he is finally given the old heave ho?
Hopefully Jay staying at NBC is good for Jimmy Kimmel Live! because with all those hours of talk the only one I will be watching will be JKL!

Inside Ricky Gervais’ Studio where he peed in the sink
November 14th, 2008 under Talk Shows. [ Comments: none ]

Leave it Ricky Gervais to bring down the normally high-brow Inside the Actors Studio to a level it has never seen and I am so glad he did! That is the funniest thing I have ever seen on the show! Way to go Ricky Gervais!!!
