SYTYCD’s Benji Schwimmer profiled
July 29th, 2006 under SYTYCD. [ Comments: none ]

Not only does Benji Schwimmer think that he can dance. So does America. The 22-year-old Redlands man is a finalist on the nationally broadcast Fox television program "So You Think You Can Dance." Whether it’s the waltz, jazz, hip-hop or mastering the mambo, Schwimmer has been dazzling the judges. He also has remained enough of a fan favorite to stay alive in the competition that borrows from the "American Idol" format of relying on viewers’ votes."Somebody in the audience held up a sign that read ‘I.E. Pride,’ " Schwimmer said in a telephone interview this week. "I was jumping up and down. I gotta represent the 9-oh-9 and the 9-5-1." Schwimmer started dancing at age 3 and now specializes in West Coast swing, just like his father, Buddy "The King of Swing" Schwimmer.Buddy and Laurie Schwimmer, Benji’s mother, teach West Coast swing at their 5678 Dance Studio in Redlands. Benji Schwimmer is so good at swing dancing that he once earned an invite to teach Kathie Lee Gifford, former co-host of the ABC morning talk show "Live With Regis and Kathie Lee."On "So You Think You Can Dance," Schwimmer is the one with the smile from here to Santa Monica. He pulled off a mambo routine with long-time partner and cousin, Heidi Groskreutz, 24, that wowed the judges. It started with a doughnut drop that resembled a man weightlifting, with Groskreutz representing the weights. "Magnificent!" said a beaming Nigel Lythgoe, the judge with the British accent. Lythgoe said the Schwimmer-Groskreutz performance was an example of why the Fox show received almost 8 million viewers the previous week. He also called it the best performance of the night.Choreographer and judge Mary Murphy criticized the couple in jest, saying that the number didn’t have enough spins. She said she counted 98 spin moves — but it should have had 100. Then she said: "No (other) two dancers on this show could have done that number."And judge Dan Karaty called the two the most refined dancers."This is the most professional routine," Karaty said after the mambo. "You leave nothing to criticize."
Schwimmer, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who served at a Mexican orphanage for two years while on his mission, said he is humbled by the praise."More than anything, whatever I’ve achieved is given to me by the man upstairs," Schwimmer said.Buddy Schwimmer said he believes his son can win it all.He said he was scheduled to be a choreographer for the program but told Lythgoe that his son was trying out and he worried that there could be a conflict of interest.Lythgoe said that there shouldn’t be a problem and noted that the show is drawing thousands of tryouts, Schwimmer said."I told him, ‘You don’t know my son.’ "Sure enough, Benji made the cut, and the elder Schwimmer had to back away from the choreography commitment. Even more so than all his son’s dance moves, Buddy Schwimmer said he is proud of his son for something else. "He’s out there having a good time," Schwimmer said. "He makes the people have a good time, and that’s the important thing. They all enjoy him as a person."

I did not know that his dad could’ve been one of the choreographers on the show. I guess he will do SYTYCD 3. In the meantime, go Benji!

SYTYCD’s Benji and Heidi can dance!
July 27th, 2006 under SYTYCD. [ Comments: none ]

OMG! How amazing were they last night. I just love watching him! The way he moves his body is so fun to watch, his legs are like rubber! Benji! Benji! Benji!

But then my friend said if he wins he will not be able to do Celine’s show because it is all contemporary and he will not be able to do that. He has not done that yet on the show, but I am sure when he does my friend will eat his words.

Now the other dancers from last night. Ivan really pulled it out last night and deserves the right not to be in the bottom two. So that means Travis and Ryan willl be there, and Ryan should be out. It is really painfull to watch Ryan dance and if he does his solo again I hope he doesn’t do a mini-version of Center Stage again. I love that movie and not him. On to the girls I think Donyelle will make her first appearance in the bottom two. She will be joined by Natalie who had the misfortune of dancing with Ryan and he brought her down. I think Allison who does not really seem to have the popular vote will get some votes because Nigel mentioned she was in High School Musical. That might get her though another week, but I am not sure it will get her to the finals. The final two should be the people pictured on the right!

SYTYCD Spoilers for 7/26?
July 24th, 2006 under SYTYCD. [ Comments: none ]

Little birdie! Little birdie!(Is this late? Does everyone know this already?)

SPOILERS:
Travis and Donyelle – Hip Hop and Quickstep
Ivan and Allison – Tango and Hip Hop
Ryan and Natalie – Disco and Contemporary
Benji and Heidi – Broadway and Mambo

Okay I’m going to do a full report. I’ll try to remember everything.

So first up was Travis and Donyelle.

They did a super cool hip hop routine to Fergie’s new song London Bridge. It was choreagraphed by Shane Sparks..which was dissapointing because my friend and I went to the show JUST for Wade and he wasn’t there. Basically they had two masks on, one in the front and one in the back. I thought the concept was awesome…and The masks weren’t a distraction…I think it was incredibly entertaining to watch ur senses jump out the window…when you can’t really tell between the front and the back.. I LOVED IT.
Nigel – He didn’t like the masks and said that it took away from the performance because the audience won’t be able to connect. He also said it would be hard for America to understand that choreagraphy.Mary Murphy – She loved it. She loved the choreagraphy the concept and the dancers. SHe said it was hot.Dan – Agreed with Nigel about the masks but said it was good. It wasn’t as good as it COULD have been but he was happy with it and thought it was a hot performance.

Next was Allison and Ivan doing doing an Argentine Tango by Alex De Silva (C’mon? argentine again?)
Nigel – Thought that the chemistry was great…was happy to see them together again and liked it.Mary – Commented on how difficult it is to get the feet whipping down…Saying that one wrong whip could turn Ivan from a rooster into a hen. She liked it. Dan – he liked it as well. Said he likes the two of them together. Also said that this time Ivan pulled Allison through the dance and worked her on the stage.

Next up was Natalie and Ryan doing a Disco by Tyce
Nigel – thought that it was bad. Ryan was uncomfortable in his shoes up on stage and that he had 0 chemistry with Natalie. Didn’t like it at all.Mary – Same. Said disco is suppose to be fun but Ryan looked completely out of place out there and didn’t show an ounce of personality. Agreed with the no chemsitry bit as well. Dan – said “it was painful to watch.” The tricks were shakey and everything about it was horrible.

Benji and Heidi. Did a was it Broadway? I coudln’t hear or see because of the screams…but I think it was that or Jazz. Nigel – Said it was fantastic..sensational..and said Hallelujah. Mary – said AMEN. LOved it. Dan – Loved it as well. Said the chemistry was fantastic.

Next Travis and Donyelle Quick step of doooom.
Nigel – Thought they danced it like they were professional dancers….but NOT professional ballroom. They did the choreagraphy..and said they didn’t get the style down. They hopped more than skipped and glided…and he said it wasn’t good “i’m afraid”. Mary – Same. She got really technical. She tore at every single detail of the dance with the feet and the arms and the turns and the “closeness” of the bodies. She said a 747 could have landed between them. Didn’t like it. Dan – Said HE loves puting down Nigel and Mary but culdn’t this time. He agreed and said it wasn’t good enough.

Next was Alison and Ivan doing a Hip Hop Routine.
Nigel – Loved the softness of it. TOld them that it was great. And said it was warm and gentle unlike the crazy upbeat high energy kind of hip hop. Mary – Agreed. She said it was cute and warm and she loved it. Dan – Commented on how difficult it is to pull a soft hip hop routine beause it’s about performance and feeling instead of just coming out and dancing full out with high energy. He praised shane for the choreagraphy and said it was great.

Next Natalie and Ryan Contemporary
Nigel – Thought it was beautiful and commented on Ryan. Said this is what Ryan’s here to do.Mary – thought it was good too. It was beautiful and nice. Dan – Same.

Final Benji & Heidi = Club Mambo
Nigel – FANTASTIC. WOW. LOVED IT. thought it looked professional.Mary – Same. Dan – Couldn’t find a single negative thing to say about it.

Conclusion – I still think that Ryan will leave on thursday. But Travis will be on the bottom 2. I think Natalie will leave on thursday with Donyelle on the Bottom 2. My thought is that with Donyelle and Travis doing Solos on thursday..more people will watch. That is why fox will put them on the bottom…So people watch to make sure their favorite is safe and they get to see them do solos. As for the Eliminating…it will be SUICIDAL for fox to get rid of Travis and Donyelle now. Their finale ratings will drop tremendously and they KNOW that. They will not be stupid and Eliminate Travis and Donyelle. That is my two cents.

OMG! I am so excited to see Benji and Heidi dance together. I think the bottom four will be Ryan and Ivan and Natalie and Allison with Ryan and Natalie out.
