WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT stars LAURENCE FISHBURNE and ANGELA BASSETT are set to team up again for a new play in Pasadena, California. The stars, who played IKE and TINA TURNER in the hit biopic, will play opposite each other in celebrated playwright AUGUST WILSON’s FENCES, when the production debuts at the Pasadena Playhouse next month (AUG06). It marks the fourth time the actors have appeared together in a project – they also starred in AKEELAH + THE BEE and BOYZ ‘N THE HOOD. In Fences, Fishburne will play an embittered former baseball star-turned-garbage collector, coming to terms with his lost dreams and his splintered family.

Actor ROB LOWE broke into fits of laughter onstage in London when he spotted a couple having sex in the audience. Lowe was alerted to the fornicating theatre-goers by other castmembers – during his stint in A FEW GOOD MEN earlier this year (06) – who used hand signals to demonstrate what was going on in a royal box. Lowe says, "One night in the royal box a couple were s**gging. I don’t know if I was sexy or they were bored."

Where the evil overlord Sauron and his orc minions failed, Toronto theatre critics and audiences have apparently succeeded: Frodo is dead, and The Lord Of The Rings is done.
The heavily hyped $28-million musical stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy trilogy will close Sept. 3, less than six months after its gala opening at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
The surprise announcement was made yesterday by The Lord Of The Rings producers Kevin Wallace and David Mirvish, facing a phalanx of reporters and cameras at a quickly called press conference in the Princess of Wales Theatre’s basement.

Although the new dance musical Hot Feet has yet to announce a closing date at the Hilton Theatre, a holiday engagement of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! — The Musical has been booked into the theatre.
Variety reports that previews for Grinch will begin Oct. 25 with an official opening on Nov. 8. The limited engagement will play through Jan. 7, 2007. Grinch, which debuted in 1998 at the Old Globe Theatre, was originally directed by Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien and played annually at the San Diego venue. Matt August will stage the Broadway run with choreography by John DeLuca.
Grinch will offer 12 performances a week. The industry paper says a special agreement was made with the unions for this non-traditional schedule. Broadway shows play, at most, eight performances a week. Grinch will perform eight shows on weekends alone.

Dreyfuss comes clean on The Producers departure |
June 27th, 2006 under Stage. [ Comments: none ]

Veteran actor RICHARD DREYFUSS has finally broken his silence over his departure from the London production of THE PRODUCERS, admitting he was fired from the West End musical. Dreyfuss "withdrew" from the show in October 2004, claiming pain from back and shoulder injuries had made it impossible for him to play MAX BIALYSTOCK. Rumours at the time suggested Dreyfuss had been sacked because he "wasn’t ready or funny enough" during rehearsal, but the show’s producers refused to comment. However, the JAWS star, 59, has finally admitted he didn’t choose to leave the production himself. He says, "I got fired. I couldn’t physically do it."
