UPDATE: An LA County Sheriff’s Department official tells Access Hollywood that they suspect alcohol was involved in the collision involving Haley Joel Osment early today. A blood sample was obtained after the young actor was taken to Pasadena’s Huntington Memorial Hospital this morning. The sample will be tested and results will be known within three weeks. If alcohol was indeed a factor, they will take the case to the District Attorney for prosecution. The sample will also be tested for the presence of drugs.

Sixth Sense star Haley Joel Osment fractured a rib and hurt his shoulder in a car crash Thursday morning, his doctor says.
Osment, 18, is expected to make a full recovery, according to Dr. Paul Gilbert, an orthopedic surgeon at Huntington Hospital where Osment will remain until Friday.
"He’s pretty uncomfortable and resting. He just wants to let everyone know he’s going to be OK," Gilbert told the Associated Press.

Haley Joel Osment was hospitalized early Thursday after he apparently lost control of his car while heading to his Los Angeles-area home, authorities said. Osment, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as a boy who could see dead people in The Sixth Sense, was driving a 1995 Saturn about 1 a.m. when the car collided with a brick pillar and flipped, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lieut. Greg Sisneros. The 18-year-old actor was awake and talking following the crash, Sisneros said. He had been alone in the car and was taken to Huntington Hospital in nearby Pasadena.Sisneros had no information on his condition, and an emergency-room receptionist said no one under that name was at the hospital.Osment is set to appear in the upcoming Home of the Giants. In the film, he plays a high school journalist covering a basketball team as it heads toward the state championship.

Roger Ebert, the revered Sun-Times movie critic who takes a back seat to no one, will temporarily turn over his seat in the balcony to celebrity co-hosts while he continues to recover from cancer surgery.Starting with the "Ebert & Roeper" show to air Aug. 5, fellow Sun-Timesman Richard Roeper will be joined by guest critics to review the week’s movies. Previously taped shows will continue to air until then. "Don’t get too used to these guest co-hosts because I’ll be back in the balcony before you know it," an upbeat Ebert said Monday from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he is reported to be in good condition and getting better each day. Ebert, 64, underwent surgery for a recurrence of salivary cancer on June 16. A follow-up surgery on July 1 repaired a blood vessel that burst near the site of the earlier operation. "Roger is improving each day and continues on his road to recovery," said his wife, Chaz Ebert. "He’s been through a lot and needs more time to recuperate. . . . Roger will return to his seat in the balcony in the near future, and I ask that you continue to send healing thoughts his way."Said Roeper: "As much as I’m looking forward to opening the balcony to some bright and challenging minds, what I’m really anticipating is that day in the near future when I can welcome back the best and most popular film critic in the world."

Pavarotti undergoes surgery for pancreatic cancer |

Tenor Luciano Pavarotti underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer and is "recovering well," his manager said Friday. The 70-year-old singer was preparing to leave New York last week to resume his farewell world concert tour in Britain when doctors discovered a malignant pancreatic mass, Terri Robson said from her London office."Fortunately, the mass was able to be completely removed at surgery," she said in a statement. "Mr. Pavarotti is recovering well and his physicians are encouraged by the physical and emotional resilience of their patient."She told The Associated Press he underwent surgery within the past week at a hospital in New York that she declined to identify. She said he remained hospitalized Friday. As a result of Pavarotti’s treatment, all remaining 2006 concerts have been cancelled, she said. It is anticipated that tour plans will resume in early 2007.Concerts had been scheduled for Finland, Norway, Austria, Switzerland and Portugal in September.Pavarotti was forced to postpone five June dates because of complications from back surgery. He cancelled eight concerts in April, saying he had been advised not to travel or perform while undergoing back treatment.Because pancreatic cancer is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage, it has one of the worst prognoses of all types of malignancies. Less than four per cent of patients are still alive five years after diagnosis, and most die within a year. Even in the minority of cases where the tumour can be operated on, only about 23 per cent remain cancer free.Robson didn’t say what type of pancreatic cancer Pavarotti had. In 2004, Apple Computer Inc.’s Steve Jobs said he had a less-lethal form of the disease and that doctors had successfully removed his cancerous tumour.
