NY anchor fired for sleeping on the job
March 14th, 2007 under Odd. [ Comments: 17 ]

Steve Bartelstein has run out of second chances at WABC/Ch. 7. The anchor, who has messed up several times on the job only to get another shot, was fired after sleeping through a newsbreak he was to anchor last Thursday morning on the horrific Bronx house fire. He was in his Ch. 7 office at the time. "He is no longer with the station, and no longer with 'Eyewitness News,'" a station spokesman said yesterday. It was a stunning move, considering that Bartelstein has been a major player on the station's top-rated early-morning newscast alongside Lori Stokes and weathercaster Bill Evans. One indiscretion on Bartelstein's part might have been overlooked, but there were others. In November, he was suspended for several days after showing up for work 20 minutes after the morning news began. A year before that, Bartelstein was sidelined for two weeks after showing up late for work and for missing a newsbreak, reportedly so that he could meet Samuel L. Jackson, who was appearing on "Live With Regis & Kelly." And there was an ugly sexual-harassment suit that was withdrawn. Despite the issues, management gave Bartelstein a new contract last June that spelled out the consequences if he slipped up again. Station insiders said Bartelstein's latest goof put Plotnik and general manager Dave Davis in a tough spot. Giving him another chance would have made it look like there was a double standard at the station. Still, the firing is troubling for many at Ch. 7 – one labeled it a "bombshell" – because outside of a proclivity for missing deadlines, Bartelstein was generally well liked.

I am shocked that WABC kept him as long as they did with all that he did.

OMG! A fugitive stole Crystal Gayle’s tour bus
February 19th, 2007 under Crystal Gayle, Odd. [ Comments: none ]

In a bizarre turn of events, the tour bus that normally carries country music’s long-haired beauty Crystal Gayle, was used as an escape vehicle by fugitive prison escapee Christopher Daniel Gay. Gay, who escaped while being transported between states, was eluding police when he began his journey to Florida from Tennessee in Gayle’s blue Prevost tour bus. “I am glad that no one is hurt. I wish he would have gone to see his mother, who is very sick, instead of joy riding in Florida.” said Gayle from her Nashville, Tenn. home. Thursday evening (Jan 25), at about 6:00 PM, Gayle’s office was contacted by USA International Speedway Operations Manager Barry Williams to inquire about Gayle’s bus being in Lakeland, Fla. Williams had quickly become suspicious of the driver who identified himself as Daniel Pitts and said he was at the track to pick up NASCAR driver Tony Stewart. After being questioned by Williams, the bus driver left “to get a sandwich.” Williams asked police to run the plates of the bus, thereby determining that it belonged to Gayle. Rumors of Gayle’s bus being abandoned by Gay and recovered by Florida police are circulating. There is no confirmation of that report and no information regarding the condition of the bus or the whereabouts of Gay.

How random is that?
BTW here is a great quote from her husband in the Miami Herald:
Her husband and manager, Bill Gatzimos, couldn’t immediately be reached for comment today, but he told WSMV-TV, “There’s got to be a country song in having your bus stolen and taken for a joyride by a fugitive.”

Did Ralph Fiennes cost a stewardess her job?
February 19th, 2007 under Odd. [ Comments: none ]

British movie star Ralph Fiennes is at the centre of a mile-high sex scandal after he allegedly became amorous with an Australian flight attendant during a long-haul flight, according to a report. A 38-year-old Qantas stewardess has been suspended and could lose her job after fellow crew members allegedly spotted her and Fiennes leaving the same aircraft toilet cubicle moments apart, The Sunday Telegraph said. In a statement lodged with her employer and obtained by the paper, Lisa Robertson said the actor had become "amorous" with her after the pair chatted together during a flight from Australia to India late last month. But she denied having sex with the 44-year-old star of "The English Patient" and "Schindler’s List". "While conversing with Mr Fiennes during my break, I expressed a need to go to the toilet," Robertson said in her statement. "I went to the nearby toilet and entered it, he followed me and entered the same toilet. "I explained to him that this was inappropriate and asked him to leave. Mr Fiennes became amorous towards me and, after a short period of time, I convinced him to leave the toilet, which he did. "I left the toilet a short time later." The newspaper was unable to get a comment from Robertson, but a spokesman for Qantas confirmed that a flight attendant had been stood down following an onboard incident.

Six sets of twins over 32 hours wow parents, Sparrow workers

At 9:05 a.m. Tuesday, Chastity Keeler gave birth to a baby boy. One minute later, she gave birth to another.

Then, over the next 32 hours, five more couples at Sparrow Hospital experienced the joy of giving birth to twins.

It’s an event that Sparrow nurses, doctors and officials believe is a record for the hospital.

"We have a number of experienced nurses, and it’s the first time within their collective memory that we’ve had six sets of twins born in such close proximity," Sparrow spokeswoman Nan Simons said.

Keeler, of Jackson, said it’s a story she’ll tell her sons, Nick and Ty, as they grow up.

"That was an extraordinary couple of days, and they were part of it," Keeler said. "They will forever be known in Sparrow history, and that’s kind of cool."

Five sets of the twins were boys. The other two infants were girls.

"It’s fun for Sparrow to mark a record like this," Simons said. "Six sets of twins, that’s a lot of babies."

Luckily this didn’t happen during a car chase scene
February 19th, 2007 under Odd. [ Comments: none ]

Some moviegoers in Torrington, Connecticut got to see some real-life action unfold as they were watching the movie “Dreamgirls” on Monday night. During the 7:00pm showing at the six-theater multiplex, a white sport utility vehicle smashed through a wall of the theater while the audience was watching the movie. Police said the accident happened about 7:45pm. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, even though the SUV came inches from some moviegoer heads. “I never thought it’d be here in the theater, especially
while the show’s running and a couple people are in here watching Dreamgirls. It was just surreal shock,” said theater owner Robert Sadlon. Police charged the driver, 46-year-old Diletta Squires, with driving under the influence.

That would scare the, well you know what, out of me.
