Rocker Dave Matthews has crashed … into his first TV role. The founder of the Dave Matthews Band (who had a hit with "Crash … Into Me") has signed to appear in an episode of Fox’s "House." In the episode, set to air in March, Matthews will play a savant who was hit by a bus when he was 10. The accident impacted his mental development, but suddenly gave him the ability to play the piano flawlessly, despite never having taken a lesson. Dr. House (Hugh Laurie) is brought in after the virtuoso begins suffering seizures and the character’s father (Kurtwood Smith) must decide whether to cure the impairment — and lose his son’s musical gift. The episode reps the directorial debut of "House" exec producer Katie Jacobs. This is Matthews’ second brush with "House": His track "Some Devil" appeared in a 2005 episode.
Hugh Laurie, who is awarded an OBE for services to drama, has been part of the British comedy establishment for over 20 years. But his career recently hit new heights after being cast as an American doctor in the US sitcom House. Laurie, 47, is the youngest of four children and the son of an Oxford GP. When he was 29, Laurie’s mother died from motor neurone disease. At Cambridge university, Laurie was part of the Cambridge Footlights Revue, which included Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson. Laurie – whose father was an Olympic gold medalist rower – also rowed for Cambridge in the 1980 boat race. In 1987, Fry and Laurie landed their own sketch show, A Bit of Fry and Laurie. Laurie also became a hit in Blackadder, and as Bertie in the smash hit Jeeves and Wooster. Movie roles have included Peter’s Friends, Sense and Sensibility and Stuart Little. But it has been as Dr Gregory House in US medical drama House that has recently made the middle-aged Englishman a huge success – and an unlikely sex symbol – in the US.
Sometimes I forget he is British because he has really perfected the American accent! BTW if you want to know more about Order of the British Empire, you can read this Wikipedia article. Can you tell I didn’t know what an OBE was?
Question: Please tell me that you have something on House!— Brittany
Ausiello: I do! There’s an emotional episode coming up in February in which Dr. Crabby Pants bonds with a rape victim and confides something shocking about his troubled relationship with his dad. So now it can be said: It’s Dad’s fault House is the way he is. Glad that mystery’s been cleared up.
I am already stocking up on tissues to get through that episode! Hugh Laurie is one of the best actors on TV today, so you know it is going to be amazing!!!
Returning for its third season, House stars Hugh Laurie as Gregory House, an antisocial but gifted surgeon who specializes in solving baffling medical mysteries.Among his foils: hospital administrator Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein), who clashes with House over his medical duties even as she acknowledges his results.Edelstein recently talked about her role.
Q: In what ways has your character changed since the show began? A: She’s a more-complete human being than when we started. Cuddy has been at her job long enough that now she’s trying to look at the rest of her life, trying to have a child, and it will change her even more. Q: How would you describe the relationship between Cuddy and House? A: They are naturally at odds with each other, but I don’t think he drives her crazy any more than she expects or wants to be driven. He is a pain in the (rear) to deal with, but he is usually right, and that doesn’t go past her.I don’t know where their relationship is going. I love the chemistry between them, but I think it would be more interesting if it didn’t work out. I don’t have a vision for how they would knock down those walls that exist between them and the outside world. They have very different tasks. His is to solve all the cases, and hers is to see that he solves all the cases without bringing the hospital down. Q: Do you get caught up in the hospital’s life-or-death situations? A: Well, we’re not doing Marcus Welby. It’s not about the good doctor who’s so warm and so caring. This guy, House, knows what he’s doing. He cares deeply and is committed to what he’s doing, but does he care because there’s a human being he’s helping or because it’s a puzzle? I think House would say it’s about the puzzle, but I’m not sure that is the truth. Q: What’s the most fun for you about playing Cuddy? A: Working with Hugh Laurie, who’s an incredible actor. And I like being on a show that is smart and funny and that I am not embarrassed at being on. It’s fun to have the same job for a few years, to develop a character.
