Johnny be good, Orlando a blooming devo
July 9th, 2006 under Johnny Depp, Kate Bosworth/Orlando Bloom, Pirates of the Caribbean. [ Comments: none ]

A Pirates of the Caribbean setsider reveals that costars Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom are complete opposites: "Johnny – the SUPERSTAR- arrived at work every day without fanfare and personally greeted everyone. Very approachable. With Orlando it was always a major scene – like Eddie Murphy arriving on the set. An entourage of twenty surrounded the actor and big bodyguards protected him (from WHOM?) Orlando’s assistant was always hovering with TWO cellphones – one for Orlando’s girlfriend (Kate Bosworth) and the other for business calls. " Johnny was down to earth and hung out with the cast and crew between shots. Orlando was aloof and whisked away to his dressing room. Everybody loved Johnny, but Orlando was in his own world. " Imagine what Orlando will be like if he ever gets to be as big a star as Johnny!

More validation why I love Johnny Depp. Orlando has been lucky enough to be such in some great franchises, it will be interesting to see if he can make it on his own. He seems to have the attitude that he already has, but he hasn’t.

Ahit Mates!
July 9th, 2006 under Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean. [ Comments: none ]

Johnny Depp’s boozy, woozy buccaneer Jack Sparrow has plundered the box office, with "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest" taking in a record $132 million in its first three days, according to studio estimates Sunday.Disney’s swashbuckling sequel sailed past the previous all-time best debut, 2002’s "Spider-Man," which took in $114.8 million in its first weekend."Dead Man’s Chest" also did nearly three times the business of its predecessor, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," which took in $46.6 million over opening weekend in 2003.The sequel surpassed that total in its first day alone, taking in $55.5 million Friday to beat the previous single-day record of $50 million, set last year by "Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith." With $44.7 million on Saturday, "Dead Man’s Chest" also became the first movie to top $100 million in just two days.

"When people in the industry predicted these high numbers, I thought they were just trying to be mean. So no matter how good we did, if we did $100 million, we’d be failures," Bruckheimer told The Associated Press on Sunday. "I didn’t think we’d get near these numbers.". In a single weekend, "Dead Man’s Chest" reeled in 43 percent of the $305 million total domestic gross the original "Pirates" rang up in its entire six-month theatrical run.The movie’s audience was equally divided between males and females, and it drew strongly from all age groups, according to Disney."It is straight across the board," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney, which based the movies on its "Pirates of the Caribbean" theme park ride. "Everybody’s coming. Whoever it is, they’re there." Even factoring in higher admission prices since 2002, "Dead Man’s Chest" still set a record of just under 20 million tickets sold, about 200,000 more than "Spider-Man."

"Maybe the only movie that has a chance to beat this record might be the next `Pirates’ movie," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Exhibitor Relations. Audiences won’t have to wait long. Disney shot much of the third installment at the same time as "Dead Man’s Chest," which ends in a cliffhanger leading into part three, due in theaters over Memorial Day weekend next year.

Depp’s success through failure
July 8th, 2006 under Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean. [ Comments: none ]

JOHNNY DEPP considers himself lucky to be such a successful actor as many of the movies he has made flopped at the box-office. Depp, who has now tasted mainstream success thanks to the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films, admits he isn’t a great judge of whether scripts he is sent will turn out to be profitable movies. The 43-year-old says, "I was in a cluster of movies that by Hollywood definitions were not successful. They were flops. "I was considered box-office poison but to me they were all successful and I don’t feel any different about a success or failure. "I don’t know how to explain it, but by some miracle I have always been able to choose my characters for movies. Being able to get jobs throughout the 90s when, in the language of Hollywood, I was box-office poison should have been hard, yet I was able to do everything single film I wanted to do. "To me, whether I’m playing ED WOOD or FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS, all these movies have commercial potential. "Pirates could have easily flopped. It’s always a crap shoot."

Pirates 2 is not walking the box office plank
July 7th, 2006 under Johnny Depp. [ Comments: none ]

I’m told already that, based on today’s matinees, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest will have the biggest opening of any movie in history. Since May 24th, I’ve been predicting that it was gonna kill everything at the theaters this summer, and then, based on the early tracking, that it was going to be the all-time record-breaker. Now Pirates 2 is set to steal away Spiderman’s No. 1 opening gross of $114.8 million. (Sorry, HBO, but Entourage’s Aquaman didn’t actually beat Spidey because that’s a FAKE movie.) That ka-ching, ka-ching sound you’re hearing in Beverly Hills is United Talent Agency’s Tracey Jacobs calculating her end-of-year bonus now that her longtime client Johnny Depp could rightly be considered America’s most popular actor. You go, girl! Meanwhile, I’m just sitting back and appreciating Pirates 2’s gargantuan box office haul. I’m told the movie could take in $45+ million more today if the shows from last night are included in the total. Right now, matinees are headed that way. Meanwhile, I’m told Warner Bros.’ Superman Returns will take a big hit (again as I predicted), down at least 50% to $25 million or so. Think about it: in one sector of Burbank, Disney’s celebrating while in another part of Burbank, Warner’s in mourning. Dontcha just love Hollywood?

Shiver me nose
July 6th, 2006 under Johnny Depp, Kate Bosworth/Orlando Bloom. [ Comments: none ]

That was the aim of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest director Gore Verbinski, although the stink he was aiming for was not a "stinker" of a movie in the box office sense.Verbinski wanted realism.Back when pirates roamed the seven seas for months on end looking for loot, Rexona and hot showers were not an option, so Verbinski ordered his pirates, led by Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, to be covered in grime.Thankfully, tickets to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, which opened in Australian cinemas this week, do not come with scratch and sniff cards.
"I think it was just important you don’t fall into the eye-patches and striped shirts and the pirates don’t look too clean," Verbinski told reporters in Los Angeles.
"They need to smell."There wasn’t a lot of personal hygiene back then so you can have a lot of fun and be absurd, but you can’t quite ever be dirty enough."
