Think you’re shocked by the Jane the Virgin cliffhanger, watch the cast’s reaction |

Last night, millions of fans of Jane the Virgin were shocked when fan-favorite Brett Dier showed up for the final five seconds of the season 4 finale. Mostly because we were all sad when his character died on the show and have been grieving him ever since.
What does his reappearance mean? Is he an evil twin? Was he taking a shower all of this time? Is it a dream? Was he faking his death so he could catch Rose? Did Jane’s father clone him as a gift for his daughter? Is Jane having a near-death experience and he is trying to convince her it is not her time yet? Have they all really been dead on the island (Miami Beach is an island) and he is coming to bring them up to heaven? We will have to wait until the season 5 premiere later this year to find out.
Executive Producer Jennie Urman told The Los Angeles Times that the season five premiere will pick up exactly where yesterday left off.
Now let’s talk about how long this plan has been in the works? Urman told the paper about a year ago, she told Dier and Gina Rodriguez (Jane) about her idea and asked them to keep secret. They did up until finale table read. The last page of the script was blacked out and once Rodriguez read her final line of the episode, Urman opened the door and in walked an alive Michael. As you can tell the cast was excited to see him.
While they screamed with joy, we screamed, “No f*cking way!” Which is what makes a great telenovela and as we know Jane the Virgin is that.
Now we have to wait 6 long months to find out what brought Michael back from the dead, who JR shot (I just got that. Wonder if that was a Dallas play along?), will Xo survive her cancer and will Rogelio survive River Fields?
Did you get that River Fields is a play on Brooke Shields name? Since a river is a like a brook and fields rhymes with shields. Pretty genius. But not an evil genius like what Urman did to all of us. To quote another witch, “I will get you my pretty.”

Be prepared to ugly cry with Jane the Virgin tonight |

Tonight at 9p on The CW, Jane the Virgin delivers its most gut-wrenching episode so far. In fact, just thinking about it makes me tear up.
Now that Xo has healed from the surgery she got to remove her breast, it is time for her to go to chemotherapy to get rid of any of the breast cancer that might be left in her body. She tells her family that she is going to use cold caps (I never heard of these before this episode), which will lessen her chances of losing her hair. She knows it will be painful, but she is strong. Rogelio (Jaime Camil) is such a supportive husband that he will do whatever she wants even though he does not want to see her suffer.
When she gets to chemo, she immediately makes a friend. For the first time since she was diagnosed, Xo (Andrea Navedo) has someone to talk to that understands what she is going through. She and Donna (Amy Brenneman) do not let the struggles of cancer get them down and help each other get stronger and healthier.
Talking about strong, when Alba (Ivonne Coll) strong arms Mateo, Rafael (Justin Baldoni) lets her have it. The two of them get into such a fight, that it looks like they will never talk to each other again. Causing Jane (Gina Rodriguez) to be in the middle. Can she work her magic to get her Abuela and her boyfriend/baby daddy back together?
When it comes to together, it looks like the case against Petra (Yael Grobglas) is almost over. JR (Rosario Dawson) can see the finish line, even though Petra’s mom (Priscilla Barnes) has come forward with testimony against her daughter. Will the charges finally be dropped, so that Petra and JR can move on with their lives?
As they prepare to move on with their lives, Rogelio is trying to move his telenovela forward into production. His co-star River Fields (Brooke Shields), is a Greengo and does not understand how Spanish soap operas work, and she wants to Americanize it. In other words, take everything out that makes it so good. Rogelio tries to fight her, but everyone keeps listening to her because she is the bigger star in America. Will he be able to save his show and his wife?
I cannot praise this show enough. What they have been doing with the breast cancer storyline is more than awards-worthy (and yes Navedo and Camil deserve awards for their acting because each week they have been hitting it out of the park), it is also educational. Not only are they being very responsible with how they are handling such a sensitive subject, they are also showing us how each family member is handling it differently. Most shows just focus on the person going through it, but they show us how a mom handles it differently than a daughter who will handle it differently than her dad. It is about being strong around the person when all you want to do is break down and cry. Which is what I am doing right now. That is how good this show has been recently, just thinking about it is making me cry again.
Therefore, watch it tonight at 9p on The CW, so I am not crying alone. Thank you Jennie Snyder Urman for this show and this storyline. I will send you a bill for the tissues!

Jane the Virgin shows how each family member deals with cancer differently tonight |

Last week when Jane the Virgin left off, we found out that Xo has breast cancer. Tonight at 9p on The CW, the whole family has different reactions how she should deal with the first step on Jane the Virgin. At one point during the episode, someone will say that everyone has an opinion how to deal with cancer; I am going to break down this review by character.
I am going to start with Rogelio (Jaime Camil) who is the centerpiece and rock on tonight’s episode. Camil wears his heart on sleeve tonight and his faces will break your heart as you watch him step up to be the man to all of these strong Villanueva women. He might be Xo’s husband, but her mother and sister are much more demanding force in her life. That changes as he tell his daughter to calm down with all of her facts and let her mom think through what is best for her. His mother-in-law is letting her anger out on everyone and he tries to get her help. Then there is his wife and he so supportive of her. He will get a huge reward for all of his actions.
Next up his Jane (Gina Rodriguez), as we know is book smart and that is exactly how she is handling it. She goes to the doctor with her parents to discuss all the options for her mom. Being Jane, she is writing everything down and asking questions, while her parents are just trying to absorb everything the doctor is saying. When they get out of that meeting, she has her opinion and she wants her mom to do what she says. Even though her father tells her to cool it for a while. The mother and daughter have a spa day and again Jane insists that her mom does what she says. Her mom gets so frustrated she walks away from her daughter. Can they heal their relationship?
Alba (Ivonne Coll) is Xo’s mom and no mom wants to see her child sick. She is mad at everyone and everything. When she goes to the store with her son-in-law to pick up some supplies, she yells at the sales clerk for no reason. Rogelio tries to convince her to talk to someone, but she says she is talking to Gd. When he does something sneaky, she rips him a new one even though he was trying to help her. Tonight, Coll acts like any mom going through what her character is going through. She is so believable; you will actually feel like the actress is her daughter who is actually going through cancer. She really gives an emotional performance that makes you want to reach through the television and hug her.
The youngest Villanueva is also going through it. When Jane tells her son (Elias Janssen) that grandma is sick, he asks to pray. He does not want her to die, so he thinks praying is the answer to saving her. He even asks his dad to pray with him, but he does not want his son to feel like he is responsible to save his abuela. Janssen’s sad eyes will make yours well up.
What about his dad? Rafael (Justin Baldoni) also had cancer, so he knows what Xo is going through. Everyone seems to have forgotten that because we only knew him after he was cancer free. Because of his life experience, he finds a way to be the sane person who can help everyone understand what Xo is going through. BTW he also directed tonight’s episode and sailor’s hat off to him for the brilliant job he did in front of and behind the camera.
Finally, there is Xo (Andrea Navedo), she is the one with cancer. She wants it out of her body, but she does not want to say goodbye to her boobs. She is in a state of shock about it all and she is so confused. She really does not have anyone to talk to without them giving her their thoughts. Until she does have someone who understands, what she is going through. It is that person’s words that will help her make her decision. With that decision, she makes the choice of who tell it to first. She is forced to grow up and she does. As she does, you will feel through just Navedo’s body language, how lost her character is. Which you can imagine how any recent cancer patient feels? A million and one things to think about and no time to consider it all.
Wait, it is not all cancer all the time. Petra (Yael Grobglas) gives us some much needed comedy when gets caught by Raf talking to herself. Well she is pretending to talk to Jane and telling Jane how she really feels about her. Not our Jane, but her Jane the lawyer and he does not know that. That is going to lead to a very awkward moment when his Jane and Petra have conservation in front of him. He he! And what about her Jane, is she interested? How can she not because who does not like this new side of Petra and you can tell Grobglas is having a blast with it.
I feel like the narrator (Anthony Mendez) right now, can you believe all of that happens in one episode? But it does folks. It is seriously one of the most powerful episodes I have ever seen about cancer because it shows how a whole family reacts to cancer and not just the person who is going through it. Everyone has an opinion and everyone handles is differently. The writers gave the cast a lot to work with and the cast delivered big time!

Tonight at 9p, Jane the Virgin is a must watch on The CW. It is the perfect amount of laugh and tears, and not for the reasons you think.
Last week, when the show left off, a doctor told Xo (Andrea Navedo) that they found a lump in her breast. This week, she and her family wait for the results of the biopsy. Each of them deal with it in their own way. Xo remains as strong as she can, but she is also very nervous. At one point, her thoughts gets the worst of her and she calls her mom (Ivonne Coll) to come over. This is a normal reaction, and the shows handles it very well.
Her husband, Rogelio (Jaime Camil) tells their daughter, Jane (Gina Rodriquez), he is scared. But he does not show Xo how he feels. Good thing he is busy trying to get River Fields (Brooke Shields) to do his show. She will keep him very busy, especially when he finds another way to disfigure her. Wait until you see how.
Jane is really worried about her mom and starts taking her fear out as anger on other people. Especially when Petra’s (Yael Grobglas) daughters tell Mateo that the Tooth Fairy is not real. Jane loses it with Petra and she does not know why. Is there any way Petra can make it up to Jane and Mateo?
Petra has her own problems, she still does not know is framing her for her sister’s murder. JR’s (Rosario Dawson) mom gives them a clue, but is it one that will finally solve this mystery? And talking about mysteries, what is going on with Petra and JR’s relationship after last week’s more than a kiss?
And then there is Rafael (Justin Baldoni) who is having his own family problems. He needs to find his sister, so that he can find his mom. Only problem is Luisa (Yara Martinez) does not want to be found. Will he be able to find her? Tonight, we learn what was happening to Luisa when she accidentally inseminated Jane with Rafael’s baby. Taking it back to season 1.
And talking about finding things out, by the end of the episode we will find out if Xo has cancer or not.
It is amazing that they fit all of that into an hour, but they did. They gave us an award winning episode that shows us what family members go through when one of them is waiting to find out if they have cancer. It is an important episode just for that, but there are also some bonus moments that will make you laugh and cry and laugh some more.
In other words, watch it!

Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez talks about masturbation! |

Gina Rodriguez plays a woman who accidentally got pregnant even though she never had sex. Recently, she sat down with Bust and they wanted to know what she thinks about the purity culture. Jane the Virgin told the magazine, “I was definitely raised with that. In all honesty, I used to feel guilty for masturbating. Oh my god, this extreme guilt! And that lasted way too long. Or maybe I masturbated too much! It’s OK to look back in retrospect and be like, it wasn’t good that I felt bad about touching myself.” She also shared with them how she feels about sharing herself with her special man, “And it isn’t bad that I want to share my love with my boyfriend. I’m 32 years old, I’m an adult, I can do that!” Yes you can! Sex is a beautiful thing and there is nothing wrong with doing it…responsibly! Go ahead, love yourself and one another!
