Daniel Smith’s flight to the Bahamas might hold the clue to his death |

TMZ has learned that Daniel Smith, the son of former Playmate Anna Nicole Smith, was dead by the time he was found in his mother’s hospital room. Sources connected to the investigation also say any allegations of negligence on the hospital’s part are unfounded. There was no shortage of oxygen, as had been previously reported. There was no blood or vomit in the room either and we’re told no drugs or alcohol were found in the room. Sources say, however, Daniel’s airplane flight to the Bahamas may provide a critical clue as to the possible cause of his death. TMZ has learned that personnel on board the flight are being interviewed by police and there are rumblings that alcohol on board the aircraft may have been a factor. Sources indicate Daniel went directly to the hospital where his mother was as soon as he landed at the airport.

I do not the law, but can minors drink on international flights when they are over international waters? Granted as I type that I remeber buying drinks on planes when I was a minor.

Update: AP initially used the wrong name of Anna Nicole’s son in this story. They said it was David and not Daniel, us bloggers just copied and pasted the story for y’all to read. So it was not us, it was AP.
Authorities are leaving open the possibility that criminal charges will be filed in the death of the 20-year-old son of Anna Nicole Smith, the Bahamas coroner said Wednesday. Her Majesty’s Coroner Linda P. Virgill told The Associated Press that authorities believe they know what killed David Wayne Smith, but are awaiting a toxicology report to confirm the findings. "We do know the cause of death," Virgill said. "But we need to confirm it with a toxicology report." She declined to disclose details but said there was no sign of physical injury to Smith, who died while visiting his mother, a reality TV start and former Playboy playmate, in a hospital three days after she gave birth to a baby girl. Deepening the mystery, Virgill said there was at least one other person in the room when Smith died. She refused to elaborate. "I can confirm that there was definitely a third person in the room at the time of death and I do know who that person is," she said. "But I am unwilling to reveal that information at this time for various reasons." A formal inquiry may be launched, in which case officials will not publicly disclose their findings until after it is completed, Virgill said in an interview. Meanwhile, police were reconstructing Smith’s steps since his arrival Saturday in the Bahamas, said Reginald Ferguson, the assistant commissioner of the Royal Bahamian Police Force. Ferguson told the AP that no drug paraphernalia or traces of illegal drugs were found on Daniel Smith, in the hospital room or near the room. "We haven’t found any illegal drugs or anything of that nature in the course of this investigation," he said. Police believe Smith went directly to Doctors Hospital in Nassau, where his mother was, after flying in to the Bahamas, Ferguson said.

The death of Anna Nicole Smith’s 20-year-old son, Daniel, in the Bahamas Sunday was not due to natural causes, PEOPLE has learned exclusively. "The cause of death is not natural," Her Majesty’s Coroner Linda P. Virgill tells PEOPLE. "However, we wish to reserve the cause of death at this time pending the toxicologist examination and report for confirmation of cause of death. Friday is the likely release date for the autopsy and toxicology report." Daniel Smith was found sitting upright in a chair after going to see his mother and his new half-sister in the private Doctors Hospital in Nassau, Reginald Ferguson, assistant commissioner of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, told reporters late Monday. "It would appear from our report that the mother had gotten up, saw him in the chair and he appeared to be sound asleep. She tried to wake him up, he was unresponsive and she sounded the alarm," Ferguson said. According to Virgill, a coroner’s inquest with a jury will take place, and Anna Nicole Smith will likely be asked for her testimony. "All persons who are relevant witnesses, like his mother and hospital staff and airline personnel who had contact with him, would have to testify," Virgill says. "The inquest would happen late October or early November to determine how, when and by what manner Daniel came to his death." She continued, "The family wishes to return the body to the United States, but it won’t be released until the reports are in."

A joyous occasion turned tragic for American celebrity, Anna Nicole Smith, when her 20-year-old son died yesterday while visiting his mother and newborn sister in their hospital room in The Bahamas.Daniel Smith, son of the model and actress, reportedly suffered a "massive heart attack" on the maternity ward in Doctors Hospital, sources revealed. Police officials were tight-lipped about the incident and would not confirm nor deny the identity of the deceased. However, Police Press Liaison Officer, Inspector Walter Evans, did verify that a California resident visiting a patient in The Bahamas, collapsed and died while on the maternity ward of the private hospital."This morning a Caucasian male was discovered sometime after 9 a.m.," said Insp. Evans. "The cause of death has not been determined and an autopsy has to be performed. Once we would have [carried out] an autopsy, [this] would confirm the exact cause of death."The press officer said an official investigation has been launched, as The Royal Bahamas Police Force deems the death an interesting one.An inside source revealed the patient was indeed reality show star, Anna Nicole Smith, 38, and that she had been on the maternity ward of the hospital since Tuesday. The source added that she gave birth to a baby girl, while officials confirmed that the patient’s son flew into the country Saturday and was visiting his mother when he became ill.According to the source, Daniel collapsed and died. The source added that his mother made an unsuccessful effort to revive her son. When The Guardian news team arrived at the hospital, security guards were at every door but visitors and patients were only allowed through the main entrance, where they were screened, questioned and directed before entering. All of the doors leading into the private hospital that would otherwise be open were locked as security guards kept a close watch to see who was leaving and entering. A security guard (who did not want to be named), said the heightened security measures were put in place to make sure the information was not leaked to the public and especially the press.Anyone wanting to get into the hospital was forced to pass four security guards holding a list of patient names for all the wards."As I got off the elevator of the third floor, there were security guards everywhere asking me again and again where I was going and they made sure I went in that direction," said a visitor. While members of the press were rushed into the conference room, hospital staff hustled the baby out into a waiting van, while Anna Nicole Smith’s lawyer, Howard K Stern, rushed to the hospital parking lot at the same time. The new mother was never seen, as she was reportedly whisked out of a backdoor exit. Photos of the baby wrapped in a pink and white blanket could not be taken, as all cameramen were diverted into the hospital conference room.Daniel’s lifeless body was then taken away in a hearse through a side exit.Anna Nicole Smith, whose birth name is Vickie Lynn Hogan, is famous for her many Playboy magazine appearances and movie roles, and is also known for her controversial tactics on various award shows. She has also been the subject of headlines on controversial litigation hearings between herself and the son of her late husband, oil billionaire J Howard Marshall, with reference to certain provisions of Mr Marshall’s last will.Anna Nicole gave birth to her only son at age 18.

In Loving Memory
DANIEL WAYNE SMITH
1/22/1986 – 9/10/2006
On September 7th Anna Nicole gave birth to a healthy 6 pound, 9 ounce baby girl. Her son Daniel was in the Bahamas with her to share in the joy of his baby sister when he passed away suddenly on the morning of September 10th. We have yet to learn the cause of death but do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor. Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son. He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being. Please do not make any press inquiries at this time so that Anna Nicole can grieve in peace.
Anna Nicole
This is so sad because you knew she really loved her son. My prayers are with her and her family.
