Billy Crystal is returning to TV tonight in FX’s The Comedians at 10p and he’s bringing Josh Gad along with him.
The show is about the two of them starring in a mockumentary of the making of their variety show that is slated on the network. To say the two of them hate each other would be understatement. Their resentment they have for each other is what makes the show so funny. Each week, they will try to make the show work even though they can’t stand each other.
The show is not only about them, it is also about their inept staff. Kristen Laybourne (Stephnie Weir) is their producer and she is beyond clueless. While she is at the top of the food chain, Esme (Megan Ferguson) is at the bottom, and she is the smartest one of them all. She knows how to play the game and she plays it better than anyone else.
You can’t have two leads like Crystal and Gad and not expect great guest stars. Steven Weber plays a director and you’ve never seen him looking like this before. Mel Brooks plays himself and he does a cat imitation that is so good even my kitty thought it was the real thing.
While those are the guest stars, the episodes have their own unique appeal. There’s one episode where they get high and go to a supermarket. Another one where Gad has to learn how to fake cry and he can’t do it. And every episode has least one funny sketch in it. Like tonight Crystal plays all the roles in that infamous When Harry Met Sally scene.
If you like to laugh, then be prepared to do a lot of it during The Comedians.
