Barbie is all about inclusivity so that little girls could have a doll that looks just like them. Today, they revealed their latest Barbie, and she represents the Down Syndrome community.
Mattel partnered with the National Down Syndrome Society to create the perfect Barbie for them.
Kandi Pickard, president and CEO of the NDSS, explained to Good Morning America how this Barbie Fashionista is different than the other dolls. “The Barbie doll itself is shorter in stature, which is typical for people with Down Syndrome. Has smaller features. You see the almond shaped-eyes. You see the bridge of the nose. There is also a crease in the palm.”
Not only did they design her appearance, but her clothing is also specific for someone with Down’s. The butterflies are the symbol for them, and blue and yellow are their awareness colors. Plus, the charm on her necklace has a meaning too. The three arrows represent the third 21st chromosome that individuals with Down Syndrome have, and they point outwards to represent rising up and moving forward.
She is a special doll, and little girls and big girls like me will want to own her. And she only costs $10.99, and you can purchase her online at the Barbie site. I want one so badly, but I don’t want to take it away from someone who really needs it.
This Barbie has touched my heart. So much so that it brought happy tears to my eyes. I am so thrilled that children with Down Syndrome can have a doll that looks just like them. Thank you to Barbie for including her in your line of Barbies with special needs.
It is so important. The more we incorporate everyone into our children’s lives, the more willing they will be to accept others.
