Universal Studios backlot suffered major damage today to a fire according to KNBC.

The iconic courthouse square from “Back to the Future” was destroyed, and the famous clock tower that enabled Michael J. Fox’s character to travel through time was damaged, fire officials said. Two mock New York and New England streets used both for movie-making and as tourist displays were a total loss, Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Darryl Jacobs said.
An exhibit housing a mechanically animated King Kong that bellows at visitors on a tram also was destroyed.

The Back to the Future clock tower set was also used for Eddie Murphy’s Nutty Professor and Ghost Whisperer. No word yet how GW will be effected by the fire.
The fire broke out on a different end of the lot from City Walk and the Gibson Amphitheater, so the MTV Movie Awards will go on.

UPDATE: A quick assess of the Ghost Whisperer set showed that the secondary exterior suffered some damage. Prepping for season 4 begins today and more should be known how much Ghost Whisperer will be effected by the fire.
