[ # ] Rock Star Supernova’s Zayra life after the show
August 18th, 2006 under Rock Star: Supernova

Last month, when the Star-Telegram talked to Dallas resident and Rock Star: Supernova contestant Zayra Alvarez in Los Angeles, she seemed to anticipate the first question: Isn’t this show an odd fit for her? After all, Alvarez is a native of Puerto Rico whose voice has a strong Latin-music tinge, and here she is auditioning for a group made up of former members of Motley Crue, Guns N’ Roses and Metallica."All I needed to know is that it wasn’t going to be metal," she said in July. "It’s going to be more pop — not pop, but more alternative. They described that it was going to be more like a mix of Coldplay and Radiohead. And I love that."Unfortunately, viewers didn’t love Alvarez, whose unusual stage moves and outrageous fashion sense frequently got her voted into the show’s bottom three every week. The Supernova guys kept bringing her back, but, despite giving her strongest performances yet, she was eliminated from the CBS reality series Wednesday night."I’m good, I’m good," Alvarez said by phone Thursday when asked how she was doing. "I know that those last performances, to me, were my best. If that didn’t please them, I’m cool with what I did, and I’m going to keep going."The group — consisting of drummer Tommy Lee, guitarist Gilby Clarke and bassist Jason Newsted — also acted as judges on the show, along with co-host Dave Navarro. Navarro, especially, often said that Alvarez didn’t seem right for the band but that she might have a good solo career ahead of her. And when she performed a Spanish-language original song on Tuesday’s show, she finally seemed in her element. But she says it’s too soon to know where she’s going with this."I have no idea," she said. "I’m fresh out of the oven. I don’t know what the world is doing out there." (The contestants are sequestered in an L.A. mansion during the run of the show.)"I’ve always done Spanish, but I’m just in the middle of finishing writing an English-language album, and I do want to rock out more," she said. "I’ll do Spanish as well, because that’s just part of me."Although Rock Star’s "Rockers" occasionally bicker, they’re always portrayed as being supportive of one another’s performances, and Alvarez said that support was genuine. Two other contestants with Texas links, Austin’s Patrice Pike (who attended school in Dallas) and Houston-based, South Africa-born Dilana Robichaux, remain on the show, and Robichaux is emerging as the favorite. But Alvarez wouldn’t commit when asked who she thinks should win. "I think everybody should win," she said of the seven remaining contestants.Alvarez said she’ll return to Dallas this weekend, but she’s not sure whether she’ll remain in Texas or relocate to L.A. The biggest drag about elimination, aside from not getting her star gig, is being away from the other contestants. "We were in a war together," she said. "Some great friendships were formed. … It was a cool summer camp, big-time."

I am going to miss her, she was like the only interesting one on that show.
