Last month, Huey Lewis broke the sad news that he is suffering from Meniere’s disease. A disorder that has affects the way that he hears music. Because of that, he was forced to cancel all of Huey Lewis and the News’ remaining tour dates. Something he had only done 5 times in the past 40 years. That is just one of the things he told Jenna Bush on Today today.
The 67-year-old singer told her that he can hear people talking, but “I can’t hear music. I can do everything but what I love to do the most, which is, you know, a drag.”
Then he told her there is not cure for it, but you can try to manage it with a diet of no caffeine and less salt. Doctors told him, it can get better. As of now, it has not. But it has only been 3 months since the heart of Rock’n’Roll stopped beating for him during a show in Dallas back in early February.
Besides making the dietary changes, he is also working with the Starkey Hearing Foundation with an experimental device to block out all of the sounds that the disease is causing him to hear. If he can hear pitch, then he might be able to perform again.
Something I am wishing and hoping for him. I saw him perform in person on Jimmy Kimmel Live and it was a great show. Someone who loves music as much as him should be able to shake, rattle and roll to it.
Hopefully, with the power of love, he will be able to hear the music again by the time the band’s newest album is released and by opening night of the musical based on their tunes.
