Retro: Jay Leno host his first Tonight Show
June 8th, 2007 under Retro, Talk Shows. [ Comments: none ]

So I was looking to do a post with all the late night talk show hosts making fun of Paris Hilton, but instead I found this clip of Jay Leno hosting his first Tonight Show on May 25th, 1992. What a difference 15 years make.
BTW how cool is this? Later on I will see if I can find David Letterman’s from CBS because I doubt his NBC one would be available.

Jerry Springer’s bodyguard secures his own show
February 19th, 2007 under Jerry Springer, Talk Shows. [ Comments: none ]

Jerry Springer’s security guard Steve Wilkos has landed his own talkshow. The bald-headed, ex-Chicago police officer will be "offering advice and doling out his own version of justice" in the daily one-hour show, which is due to air in the US from the Autumn. The as-yet untitled series will be filmed in front of a live studio audience at WMAQ-TV Chicago, the home of The Jerry Springer Show for the past sixteen years. Richard Dominick, ep of Jerry, will also serve as ep on the new show. Wilkos has become synonymous with the show since he joined in 1993, and has even filled in as guest host in Jerry’s absence over the past two seasons. "It’s truly incredible that I first came to work part-time with Jerry and Richard some 14 years ago and here I am now getting my own show," said Wilkos. "I believe my Marine training of what is right and what is wrong and the street smarts I picked up as a police officer, will assist me in helping my guests get through the hard times they face each day." "Steve and I have been working on this project for many years and it’s very exciting to see it come to fruition," said Dominick. "If you are rich and need help, you can call a lawyer or a doctor. For ordinary people, when they have a problem, they call the police and now they can call Steve. America needs a hero and now they have one." Springer added: "I am thrilled that Steve is getting his own shot and the fact that we will be paired back-to-back in many markets starting next season will make for a very strong lineup. The question now is, how well can he dance?"

I see that show lasting as long as the marriages of the guests who appear on Jerry Springer do…a week.

Greg Bernhendt gets the axe
February 19th, 2007 under Talk Shows. [ Comments: none ]

Sony Pictures Television daytime talk program “The Greg Behrendt Show” is officially the third casualty of the season for syndicators. Production crew and staff members were informed Tuesday that the series was ending production and would not return next fall for a second go around. Story continues below… Production for the series is expected to continue at least for the short term and possibly for the rest of the season, according to multiple sources close to the series and Sony. “The Greg Behrendt Show” has averaged a 0.8 rating this season, tying for last place among talk programs with “The Megan Mullally Show.” The Tribune station group, where Sony had sold the series in major markets, passed on renewing “Behrendt” in favor of the upcoming “Jerry Springer” spinoff series “The Steve Wilkos Show.” Sony made an effort to pitch the Behrendt show to other stations at the National Association of Television Program Executives show last week, but was unable to find takers.

Did anyone actually watch this show? And what is worst for his ego…getting cancelled or being replaced by Jerry Springer’s bodyguard?

Another talk show silenced
February 19th, 2007 under Talk Shows. [ Comments: 1 ]

Warner Bros. "The Keith Ablow Show" is not returning for a second season in the fall. The strip has managed to attract a mere 1.0 national rating, not enough to justify continued support for the show beyond this season. Two other freshmen gabbers, NBC U’s "Megan Mullally" and Sony’s "Greg Behrendt," have already been canceled. (The latter two averaged only a .8 rating.) Warner Bros. execs said at NATPE two weeks ago that they would continue to support "Ablow" through this season, but would not comment on any future plans for the talker. "We’ll continue to produce the show for TV stations for the balance of the year and support it the way we do with all of our shows," Warner Bros. Domestic TV prexy Ken Werner said at the time. One major station group topper, some of whose outlets air "Ablow," said it was clear the show would not return, even though no official word has come down.

At the rate talk shows and soaps are being cancelled, how are networks going to fill their morning and early afternoon hours?

Even the Daytime Emmys are over talk shows
February 19th, 2007 under Talk Shows. [ Comments: none ]

A Daytime Emmy snafu left National Academy of Arts & Sciences officials scrambling Monday to alert voters to a program ballot that mistakenly left off the talkshow category. As a result, skeins like "The View" and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" were absent from the list. Omission also affected the rest of the program ballot, leaving the list of eligible shows in the remaining categories all jumbled. New York-based NATAS started receiving calls soon after the ballot to choose the final Daytime Emmy nominees went online Monday afternoon, as did the rival L.A.-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (which consults with NATAS on the Daytime Emmy Awards but wasn't involved with the balloting this year). But thankfully for the National Academy, the ballot was located online, for the first time ever, in PDF form. Daytime Emmy officials were able to quickly correct the mistake after hearing about it. Daytime Emmy director Brent Stanton said just nine ballots were cast using the incorrect form between the time the ballot was first posted and when NATAS yanked down the incorrect version. Those voters will be contacted and ask to fill out a new ballot. All 1,800 eligible Daytime Emmy voters have been emailed about the mistake and told that it has been corrected, Stanton said. "We were fortunate that most people didn't go on the site immediately," Stanton said. The balloting hasn't been without hiccups: It was originally supposed to be available last week but was pushed to Monday. Voting will continue through the end of the month. Late Monday, Stanton was breathing a sigh of relief. Had this mistake occurred on the old printed ballot, it would have taken days to correct — and required an entirely new mailing.

Variety

Could you imagine the day of nominations if they had not caught their mistake what it would've been like on The View set? You know they would all be blaming Rosie O'Donnell for why they didn't get nominated.
