When her million dollar collection of jewellery was apparently stolen, Hollywood star Lindsay Lohan made a desperate appeal for the thief to hand it back. The party-loving actress was said to be devastated after her Hermes handbag went missing as she arrived at Heathrow Airport. The police were called in and a hunt launched for the culprit who had made off with the jewellery – thought to be worth £530,000To her delight, the bag and its contents were returned to her after being found by a chauffeur in a car park near Heathrow Airport and handed into police. But now officers believe there may be a far more innocent explanation for its disappearance. They think her aides may simply have forgotten to load it into the boot of the car as they prepared to drive the actress to London’s Dorchester Hotel.Police confirmed they had returned the bag to Miss Lohan and the Hollywood star checked its contents and told officers that nothing was missing.A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said that officers were now happy that, contrary to initial reports, the bag was never stolen. She added: "The incident is being classed ‘recovered lost property’. The victim has confirmed that no items are missing and we can find no evidence of theft."The 20-year-old actress claimed the orange Hermes designer handbag was stolen shortly after she arrived at Heathrow’s Terminal One on Thursday night. She made a desperate appeal for its safe return, saying it contained vital medication for asthma. But the man who recovered the handbag has told the Daily Mail how he came across it lying in a car park."I found the bag on the back of a trolley in a carpark near Terminal One on Thursday night," he said."I picked it up with the intention of handing it into police. I had no idea it was Lindsay Lohan’s until I saw the news headlines on Friday morning. I contacted the police straight away and said I would drop it off at Heathrow police station."Police said they are treating the chauffeur, who runs his own private hire car business, as a witness – not a suspect. No-one has been arrested.A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said. "A member of the public contacted us to say they had found it and brought it in. We have not yet established what, if anything, is missing."A police source said the bag contained "items", but it was unclear whether the valuable jewellery had been taken. Officers were expected to reunite Miss Lohan with the bag yesterday afternoon.
