Jeff Jacobson thought he would surprise his mother with a Cameo from her ex-neighbor, Smokey Robinson, with a Happy Chanukah greeting. Let’s just things didn’t go as the good son expected.
That is because when it came time for the legendary Motown singer to wish Michael a Happy Chanukah, Smokey had no idea what the Cheh-new-kah was. I didn’t either until I realized he was talking about Ha-new-kah.
Maybe, instead of going to the Go-Go, he should go to a temple when they open up again.
Seriously, I hope the track of his tears are tears from laughter and not crying. This is awesome and understandable. If you have never seen Hannukah spelled like Chanukah, then I can understand his mistake.
Heck, the first time I ever ordered a Chai tea, I thought it was pronounced like the Hebrew word for life, chai. I couldn’t understand why the barister was looking at me like I had horns growing out my head until she said the word properly. Whoops. It happens to the best of us, including me.
Now, I want one of the late night hosts to book Smokey on their show and have him try to pronounce the other Jewish Holidays like Rosh HaShana, Yom Kippur, Pesach, Rosh Chodesh, and Purim, to name a few.
UPDATE: Word got back to Smokey Robinson about his boo boo, so he made a request on Twitter. “Hey @jeffjacobson – in the spirit of 2020, I’m gonna need a do-over! Please DM your mother’s phone number so we can try this again.”
Jacobson gave Smokey’s his mom’s number, and true to his word, the singing legend called her.
That is what makes a man, a man. Someone who can admit his own mistakes and rectify them.
I hope that no one holds a grudge against him because mistakes happen to everyone.
