Will you watch Roseanneless?
June 21st, 2018 under Roseanne. [ Comments: none ]

On May 29th ABC cancelled Roseanne over a racist tweet she wrote and 23 days later they announced they picked up the spinoff that will have everyone but her.

ABC described The Conners (tentative title) as, “After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before. This iconic family – Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and D.J. – grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America. Through it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns – with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails.”

Does that sound like something you will want to watch? Then mark your calendars for Tuesdays at 8p because that is when the 10 episodes will air.

When it comes to me, I will skip it. I hated last season. It did not feel like the original. It was missing the heart that made it so great. It could have been Roseanne’s fault. It could have been Whitney Cummings’ fault because she only writes punchlines. Both of them are gone. Wait, maybe I talked myself into watching it.

Roseanne says she begged for people’s jobs
May 31st, 2018 under Roseanne. [ Comments: none ]

Two days after ABC abruptly cancelled Roseanne over an abhorrent tweet by the show’s creator and star, the actress tweeted she tried to save the show and everyone’s jobs.

She wrote, “I begged Ben Sherwood at ABC 2 let me apologize & make amends. I begged them not to cancel the show. I told them I was willing to do anything & asked 4 help in making things right. I’d worked doing publicity4 them 4free for weeks, traveling, thru bronchitis. I begged4 ppls jobs. He said: what were you thinking when you did this? I said: I thought she was white, she looks like my family! He scoffed & said: ‘what u have done is egregious, and unforgivable.’ I begged 4 my crews jobs. Will I ever recover from this pain? omg.”

Sherwood has made a lot of bad decisions, how he handled Michael Strahan leaving Live, the Castle firings and getting rid of Paul Lee, but this was not one of them. I am sorry for all the people who lost their jobs. Roseanne was in the spotlight again and she should have been smarter with her tweets. But she has built a career getting away with stuff she should not have done, so what was going to stop her? I doubt even this will.

Although she might have learned a little lesson because she also tweeted, “I think I’ll b better tomorrow. The saddest part of all is 4 Jayden Rey on the show whom I grew2 love so much & am so ashamed of myself that she would ever think I do not love her bc she is African American. It’s the most gawd awful painful thing. I can’t let myself cave in tho.”

Words hurt and we all have to remember that the pen can be mightier than the sword. Or nowadays it would be the fingers are more deadly than an assault weapon.

Donald Trump made Roseanne’s cancellation about him
May 30th, 2018 under Donald Trump, Roseanne. [ Comments: none ]

Once you got over the shock of Roseanne being cancelled by ABC, then you were dying to know what Donald Trump thought about his favorite sitcom getting the sudden ax. Today, he broke his silence about it and just like his Memorial Day tweet, it was all about him.

He went all Carly Rae Jepsen as in Call Me Maybe and wrote, “Bob Iger of ABC called Valerie Jarrett to let her know that “ABC does not tolerate comments like those” made by Roseanne Barr. Gee, he never called President Donald J. Trump to apologize for the HORRIBLE statements made and said about me on ABC. Maybe I just didn’t get the call?”

Let’s be honest, if everyone called him every time they said something some bad about him, then his phone would never stop ringing. If his phone never stopped ringing, then he would never be able to tweet. You know, I think I am on to something, let’s all start calling him everytime we say something negative, so he will not tweet! Can one phone handle all of those calls all of the time?

Talking about tweeting, Roseanne Tweeted, “I have had odd ambien experiences on tweeting late at night-like many other ppl do.” Well, Sanofi US, the company who makes the sleeping pill, had a message for her. They said, “People of all races, religions and nationalities work at Sanofi every day to improve the lives of people around the world. While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.” Who knew a pharmaceutical company could be funnier than a comedian? But then again, look at the comedian.

Roseanne Barr says don’t feel sorry for her, but for everyone else on the show
May 29th, 2018 under Jimmy Kimmel, Roseanne. [ Comments: none ]

Thirteen hours after Roseanne quit Twitter, she came back on it with several retweets and one written by herself. She wrote, “Don’t feel sorry for me, guys!!-I just want to apologize to the hundreds of people, and wonderful writers (all liberal) and talented actors who lost their jobs on my show due to my stupid tweet.”

If she were a late night host, then she would use some of her personal money to make sure the people who lost their jobs are taken care of like Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Jay Leno all did. But she won’t because when has she has done anything for anyone but herself?

Talking about late night, Kimmel weighed in on her firing on his show. The ABC late host said, “We don’t have much on this network. We’re hoping the NBA finals go 11 games this year. We are still airing America’s Funniest Home Videos. Roseanne was a very bigly hit for ABC and we needed it.” That is such an understatement. They really really really needed it, did I say really.

Kimmel also suggested what his network should do and that is to just rename the sitcom Dan and have everyone else still be part of the show. Or as he put it, “with all the cast members you love.”

While that his suggestion, this is mine. On Tuesdays have Modern Family at 8p and Speechless afterward. Then on Wednesday The Goldbergs leads the night, followed by its spinoff Schooled, American Housewife goes to 9p and Single Parents closes the night. Finally make it Retro Fridays with the ’90s based Fresh Off The Boat leading off the night and then take it back to the ’70s with The Kids are All Right at 8:30p. I can’t think of what else they can do to save their fall. What do you think they should do?

UPDATE: Roseanne does not want people to stand up for her because, “guys I did something unforgiveable so do not defend me. It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting-it was memorial day too-i went 2 far & do not want it defended-it was egregious Indefensible. I made a mistake I wish I hadn’t but…don’t defend it please. ty.” She also released the below statement.

ABC cancels Roseanne over her racist tweet
May 29th, 2018 under Roseanne. [ Comments: none ]

So I when I started writing this story, it was about Wanda Sykes quitting Roseanne. Turns out she was just the pebble in the ocean because ABC cancelled the show. Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment released this statement, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”

I am completely blown away. Roseanne was TV’s #1 show and ABC needed a hit. They had one in her show. You would have thought that they would have stayed with it and say screw the controversy. I guess not. My hat is off to ABC. They rightfully took a stand against hate and they are going to pay a big price for it. Yet they don’t care.

Although the way the sitcom was dropping in the ratings, I would assume they saw those numbers coming down the earth and would not be worth their hefty salaries. But it leaves them with a huge hole in their lineup. A HUGE HOLE!

What show will they get to replace to Roseanne, we don’t know, but their new comedies are not strong so I wish them luck.

Back to the original story:

Hours after Roseanne tweeted this “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj,” about Barack Obama’s White House adviser Valerie Jarrett, who is African-American. Needless to say, everyone is pissed off with her racist tweet.

Wanda Sykes, who was a consulting producer on the sitcom, had this to say about it, “I will not be returning to @RoseanneOnABC.” According to TMZ, Sykes is friends with Jarrett. Seems like that friendship trumped whatever working relationship the two comedians had together. Back in 2014, Sykes was the EP of Last Comic Standing and Roseanne was one of the judges. Bruce Helford, who was the EP, worked with Sykes on her show back in the day.

Sykes was the second producer to leave the show since the season finale. Whitney Cummings was first because her schedule was too busy to do the show.

Sara Gilbert, who went from star of the show to EP and star, tweeted this before the cancellation, “Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show. I am disappointed in her actions to say the least. This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love— one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member.”

When it comes to the revival, let’s be honest, it was not as good as the original. The cast did not have the same chemistry, the writing was painful and the acting felt forced. In a way, it is sad the show’s last episode is its last episode because is absolutely awful, like well…

Talking about last episodes, another reason why this cancellation is a big deal is that ABC is probably going to lose at least one of their biggest shows next season. It has long been rumored that Modern Family is ending. Not only that, I saw that Ellen Pompeo might be ready to hang up her lab coat which would most likely mean the end of Grey’s Anatomy. Plus, we all know that American Idol was not hit they were hoping for. This hole will be costly for them.

Will they vacate their Friday comedy hour and move Fresh Off the Boot and Speechless to Tuesday, moving one of their new sitcoms to Friday. Will they rush through a revival like Scrubs? It shall be interesting.

When it comes to Roseanne, she has not tweeted anything about the show’s cancellation. But she did tweet this, “I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste.” Too little, too late.
Emma Kenney, who played Roseanne’s granddaughter, tweeted, “I am hurt, embarrassed, and disappointed. The racist and distasteful comments from Roseanne are inexcusable.” Then she followed up that Tweet with :As I called my manager to quit working on Roseanne, I was told it was cancelled. I feel so empowered by @iamwandasykes , Channing Dungey and anyone at ABC standing up for morals and abuse of power. Bullies will NEVER win.” This girl is going to be a star, she was the best part about the revival.

Below is Michael Fishman’s statement about the cancellation. He played DJ, Roseanne’s son throughout the show’s entire run.
