[ # ] Axl Rose needs to get over himself
November 26th, 2008 under Axl Rose

Believe it or not Axl Rose is going after Dr Pepper for giving away free sodas because he (not Guns N' Roses) finally released the extremely disappointing Chinese Democracy. According to Rolling Stone, he wants an apology from them because they had computer glitches on Sunday during the sign up for the free Dr Pepper or he plans on suing them.

According Axl Rose’s lawyer Alan S. Gutman, things went terribly wrong: Yesterday he sent a letter to Dr. Pepper CEO Larry Young saying that the soda company’s website crashed and that “the redemption scheme your company clumsily implemented for this offer was an unmitigated disaster which defrauded consumers and, in the eyes of vocal fans, ‘ruined’ the day of Chinese Democracy’s release”. The band is seeking a public apology via ads in newspapers, plus more time for people to claim their free soda and monetary damages. In the words of the letter: “Now it’s time to clean up the mess.” The letter continues, “As we all now know, Dr. Pepper created an expansive and highly-publicized advertising campaign based solely on the exploitation of my cleints’ legendary reputation. In and of itself this campaign brazenly violated our clients’ rights in numerous respects. Unfortunately, Dr. Pepper has now magnified the damage this campaign has caused through its appalling failure to make good on a promise it made to the American public.”

Other highlights from the letter: “Our clients are outrated at your treatment of their fans and the American public in general. After it became clear that Chinese Democracy would be released in 2008, Dr. Pepper executive Tony Jacobs proudly proclaimed that Dr. Pepper would make good on its promise to give a free soda to everyone in America. It turned out that Dr. Pepper did not define ‘everyone in America’ the same way as ‘everyone in America’ defined ‘everyone in America.’” It concludes, “Had you wished to engage in a commercial tie-in with our clients, you should have negotiated a legitimate arrangement instead of hijacking their rights without payment. Rest assured, this misappropriation will not be free.”

Seriously? WTF? Dr Pepper did extend the offer until 6p on Monday because of the glitch. So maybe they need to do their research? Dr Pepper helped to remind people that Chinese Democracy was finally coming out, he should be thanking them for the free publicity and not suing them. Axl mislead us saying that that CD was a GNR album when in fact it was only his and that it sucks. I had my issues with the CD because of the blogger that was arrested for posting it early, but I thought I would be fair and give it a shot when it was up on MySpace for free and I could not believe how lame it was. The songs that made GNR who GNR, were not evident on Chinese Democracy. It is just bad and boring.

So I say to Axl thanks for the Dr Pepper, but can I get an appology the time I wasted listening to Chinese Democracy?

As far as I’m concerned, I hope he sues and wins big. This was all a gimmick by Dr. Pepper anyway. I never was able to get on the server, even Monday. Plus, EVERYONE does not have Internet access, so this would have dienfranchised a lot of people, even if they meant to keep their word. I’ll never buy Dr. Pepper again. The measley bottle of soda does not matter; it is the principle of not keeping your word. They had several weeks to prepare, so they have no excuse. I would know what I was getting from Axl and company, at least. To paraphrase both your blog search header and Jay & Silent Bob: F*ck Dr. Pepper, f*ck them up their f*cking a$$!

What an idiot! I sub to freebies blogs, and saw when Dr. P came out with the promo, and tried to get mine that day. Their pages loaded slowly at first, then after trying a few times, just errored instead.

I figured they’d extend the promo because of that, and they did. I got mine submitted the next day, and only thought about how the marketing team boo boo’d by thinking they’d only allow a single day for the promo, and bet Dr. P’s IT team had non-stop migraines.

But I didn’t think a single bad thing about Axl, until now. Dr. P made a minor mistake by not anticipating the rush. But Axl and his team purposely attacked the Dr. P company over something minor.

Back when GNR was super popular, I had reserved my birthday at a club I waitressed at. One of the “dancers” had a birthday that week also, and she tried to reserve her birthday the same night as mine, but I was already signed up.

She came begging me to give her my reserved birthday because that was the night GNR was supposed to be in town, and most famous bands dropped in after their shows, and she wanted to “stand out” from the other dancers to increase her chances of being the lucky “groupie”.

I asked her how badly she wanted to “stand out”, and she paid me $50, so I gave up my birthday night for a slower night. But some of my coworkers didn’t hear that I’d sold my birthday, and brought my cake that night. I didn’t go onstage that night for my birthday, but I still made quite a bit more in tips because it was supposed to had been my birthday, then I got my “stage” time later that week. And, I didn’t have to waitress for GNR either (VIP waitresses hated getting stuck with big bands lol). Yay!

I believe the birthday dancer at least got some dance time in with Axl. Later that night, Slash vomited on one of the former Penthouse Pet’s leg HA HA!
