[ # ] WTF CNN gives DL Hughley a show?
October 15th, 2008 under TV News

(photo from WireImage)

Seriously? Just when you think CNN can't sink any lower, Variety is reporting that they are giving DL Hughley a news show on Saturdays at 10p.

"D.L. is a very thoughtful, well-informed guy with unpredictable views, and I’ve always admired his comedy," said CNN/U.S. prexy Jon Klein. "The basic premise of the show is, what if a guy like him was let loose in the CNN building for a weekend after the lights went off?"

Klein said CNN could not release the name of the show yet. Veteran producer Mitch Semel will be the exec producer and showrunner.

While Comedy Central has two dominant players in the news-laffer genre — "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" — Klein said the new CNN skein will be different. "Daily" and "Colbert" are "fake newscasts, whereas this is really D.L.’s observations and comments on the week’s events and his riffs on the news," Klein said.

"I’m a big fan of both of those shows," Hughley said, "but I’ve got a different skill set. I’m not going to parody a news show or a news anchor. My show will reflect my views on things just as their shows reflect their views."

The Hughley show will tape before a live audience on one of CNN’s news sets in New York. Asked about the format, Hughley said, "We’re going to have to find our way." But the general idea is to have fun with the news, either in commenting on it or, more often, by talking to people who are making it.

To that end, CNN’s global newsgathering operations will be key. "He’s got access to the full treasure trove of resources," Klein said. "We expect he’ll run amok a little."

The most trusted name in news, no more.

Actually DL IS very well informed and intelligent. I have seem him discuss his political views in many different ways. In standup and on political shows. He’s a naturally funny guy so he does add humor to his views, but they are still valid points and even through the jokes you can see the activist in him shining through. Just because he’s a comedian doesn’t mean he won’t be an insightful addition to CNN. And he’s an independent, so his views aren’t biased, they are just how he personally feels. I’d like to see him take on both parties. He won’t let them get away with a thing, especially bullshit answers. Don’t be so quick to judge… Not everyone can relate to Larry and Katie. I’m surprised CNN will allow someone so politically incorrect to have an opinion on their network. Could be interesting…

[ # 208196 ] Comment from Yep [October 15, 2008, 8:14 am]

Uh…did you see him on Real Time with Bill Maher? He was one of the biggest idiots ever to be a guest. And he’s about as naturally funny as cancer. Your opinion is disqualifying YOU as well-informed and intelligent.

[ # 208204 ] Comment from Eric [October 15, 2008, 8:59 am]

Besides, since when does proclaiming yourself “independent” suddenly turn all your biases into not biases?

[ # 208207 ] Comment from Adolph Pastrami [October 15, 2008, 9:02 am]

“Yep,” you are most likely some sad little sissy boy republican. I saw him on twice and he was actually pretty funny and definitely informed. Maybe you’re just mad because your bronze age values are being challenged? Too bad nancy boy.

[ # 208208 ] Comment from jason [October 15, 2008, 9:14 am]

He’s a very unappologetic antisemite. Wow, has anyone noticed on coverage at CNN about a third of the experts are black (which I wouldn’t have issue with if they were they had the same creditials as the white counterparts, which only Donna Brazile does) interesting since the black population is 11% of populace. Can they please hire a couple of latinos or asians (yes I know one of thier anchors is but she isn’t on election coverage) too!

[ # 208236 ] Comment from CNN insider [October 15, 2008, 11:09 am]

The reason CNN is only hiring BLACKS is because the director of talent (ie guy in charge of hiring) is a dude named Henry Mauldin, who is black, and seems intent on righting every single wrong against blacks throughout history by hiring ONLY blacks. It’s ridiculous.

[ # 208255 ] Comment from Weeble [October 15, 2008, 12:02 pm]

I doubt CNN is only hiring blacks particularly when the highest paid, most powerful and new gatekeepers are white. Would it be great if they did hire more Hispanics and Asians? Yes! That being said, DL is intelligent and does a great job of news commentary, regardless of his race. CNN insider, are you sure you don’t work for Fox News? You seem like you might fit in well with “America’s Newsroom”, LOL.

[ # 208419 ] Comment from pinky [October 15, 2008, 11:42 pm]

You people who claim that CNN is hell-bent on hiring blacks are idiots. So I suppose the fact that whites dominate pretty much everything in the U.S. is irrelevant. Oh I forgot - whites always make their way in life through merit. I forgot.

DL Hughley is unfunny and an idiot too. I never found him to be funny but when he reiterated Don Imus’ remark by calling those black female college basketball players “nappy-headed hoes” I was completely done with him. As a black woman, I am constantly offended by society’s tolerance of the denigration of black women, while the denigration of other women is not tolerated. If Hughley’s (or Imus’s) remarks had instead been about Asian women and involved “slanty eyes”, or Hispanic women and “donkey shows”, or god-forbid - white women - his ass would have been hauled out of Hollywood a long time ago. But to call black women “hoes”, “bitches” and to regularly portray them in all types of demeaning, sexualized situations - nah, that’s tolerated. His remarks were also bad because he wasn’t even targeting people in the public eye, like celebrities - they were simply young college girls just going to school like tons of other young Americans, who happened to be black and happened to play basketball. Could you imagine if your college daughter was being called a “nappy-headed ho” across the national airwaves, simply due to to color of her skin and because she happened to be in a basketball game? CNN is both out-of-touch and insensitive to give this fool a show.

[ # 211605 ] Comment from Tony Freeman [October 23, 2008, 3:31 pm]

I am shocked that DL was given this opportunity with CNN. I used to be a fan; however, his disparaging remarks in defense of the Don Imus controversy regarding the Rutgers University Women’s Basketball Team was a disgrace. If Don Imus was reprimanded than so should DL Hughley. Just because he happens to be African American and a comedian does not give him a pass. Giving him this forum without an apology to the ladies of Rutgers is disrespectful.

[ # 212401 ] Comment from RhondaCoca [October 25, 2008, 3:48 pm]

Thank you Tony Freeman, I was coming to say the exact same thing.

[ # 212443 ] Comment from John [October 25, 2008, 7:01 pm]

Just got done watching the show, if CNN hired Hughly because he is intelligent and well informed i think they made a mistake. I just saw a terrible hour of tv. Hughly stumbled all over himself while speaking, seemed to be reading off of cue cards. what i saw was more like a commercial for the Obama campaign. earlier post stated Hughly is an independent and Unbiased? my rear!!

[ # 212449 ] Comment from Mike [October 25, 2008, 7:38 pm]

Wow… did that show blow!

[ # 212452 ] Comment from Tracy [October 25, 2008, 7:48 pm]

DL is a total idiot!!!! He took Black Fold back 50 years. His show actually made me sick. Is this an underhanded joke by CNN? I am in shock. DLL IS NOT FUNNY.

[ # 212471 ] Comment from anon [October 25, 2008, 8:46 pm]

I wanted to support DL Hughley, not so much for his comedy, but more out of support for more African American/minority shows on television. I am so disgusted at how D.L seemed to remind and reaffirm negative stereotypes of black america. Jokes referring to “chicken wings, and being broke,” did not make me laugh, but made me question why he would affirm some of these negative myths. All races love chicken wings, and all races are having some kind of deep financial despair, (hint- all of america going in a recession.) I simply can not support this nonsense. Thanks, but no thanks CNN.

[ # 212486 ] Comment from smello [October 25, 2008, 9:42 pm]

As an African American, I was disgraced by this show.Dl is NOT FUNNY ,Ignorant. It looked like some of the bad programming they show on BET.NOT PROGRESSIVE And not reflective of the community.CNN come ON, with all of the intelligent people of all colors working there HOW??? did this get o the air,, this is CNN not Fox. TAKE IT OFF>

[ # 212638 ] Comment from CYT [October 26, 2008, 7:32 am]

Why on earth would CNN give DL a show!! This is horrible, he is not funny and is not the OBAMA nor the black community. This man is truly stupid if he thinks that his show will enlighten anyone and CNN has truly loss its credibility. PLEASE TAKE THIS SHOW OFF!!! OR AT LEAST MOVE IT TO 3AM WHEN EVERYONE IS SLEEP!!!

[ # 212656 ] Comment from Richard E. Presha [October 26, 2008, 8:53 am]

Since Barack Obama initially announced his run for the U.S. presidency, he’s been carrying the burden of being the first African American candidate for the U.S. presidency to have a real shot at being elected. Despite their dubious claims of providing “fair and balanced programming,” the cable and network news shows have each treated Obama’s candidacy as an oddity, and have directly or indirectly insinuated the issue of race into their coverage. The coup de grace, however, has been administered by CNN which has inexplicably given a platform to the wretched D.L. Hughley minstrel show. I can only imagine that the “suits” at AOL Time Warner and CNN have calculated that, in the two weekends immediately preceding the national elections, Hughley’s hour-long presentations will have the same impact on Obama’s chances that George H.W. Bush’s Willie Horton ads had on the Michael Dukakis campaign. Hughley’s “coon show” antics and skits manage to reinforce every possible negative black stereotype at a time when Barack Obama’s intelligence, eloquence, and dignity have done so much to dispel these unfortunate images around the world and present black men in a new, positive light. Shame on D.L. Hughley for pouring gasoline on the still-smoldering fires of racism and, once again, selling out African Americans to the highest bidder. Shame on CNN for allowing this pitiful spectacle to be broadcast — again, and again, and again. I, for one, have watched my last CNN broadcast and I encourage every American of conscience (and of conciousness) to boycott CNN so long as this offensive and dangerous type of programming is allowed to continue.

[ # 212694 ] Comment from myxxx [October 26, 2008, 11:32 am]

I appreciate the efforts of CNN in diversifying their programming and I think it’s much needed. However, it show was the worst. Yes, it was stereotypical, but it also lacked substantive content and meaning. It also lacked any humor. I painfully watched the whole hour in hopes that it would improve, but no such luck. I feel bad that it wasn’t a something more meaningful and humorous at the same time. Maybe he could re-write the show format.

[ # 212769 ] Comment from mart [October 26, 2008, 5:17 pm]

i have to agree, i couldnt bear to watch the last 20mins. what a disappointment.

[ # 212777 ] Comment from Anonymous [October 26, 2008, 6:14 pm]

I absolutely hate this show.

[ # 212781 ] Comment from Anne McCrady [October 26, 2008, 6:38 pm]

This show is a big misstep for CNN. It’s not funny, it uses bigotry for profit and it makes CNN look ridiculous. Write CNN and urge them to take it off the air.

[ # 212784 ] Comment from Ami [October 26, 2008, 6:56 pm]

I AM SO MAD RIGHT NOW that I’m in tears! I mean WHY? The devil is hard at work, I swear! This sets black people back so far. This show just looks God awful to white people trying to get to know and understand blacks. Why didn’t they keep Roland Martin on? Are they trying to destroy Senator Obama, are the Republicans behind this? This is such a divisive and unfunny show with all of the bad stereotypes and flat sense of humor!

I wrote CNN a scathing letter, how dare they put him on with this nonsense 9 days before election day! There are independents still undecided and this is just the thing to make them rethink an Obama presidency! I hate him and CNN right now!

Senator Obama and Michelle are the RIGHT couple to move this country forward positively and then here is this fool acting like he’s on an HBO special!

[ # 212798 ] Comment from Nic [October 26, 2008, 7:53 pm]

Like most of the comments on this post, I was just as shocked watching this show tonight. At first I was curious after all the advertising regarding this show, what in the world DL Hughley would talk about on a show with CNN. So I watched the FULL hour and was sort of shocked on some things. I think it is not entirely a bad show. He was funny on some things. And I like parts of the interview he did with Scott McClellan. However I was totally lost on the special guest the Meterorite guy and did not know what his purpose was. I think the skit where he was in North Carolina for the Palin rally was okay and a bit funny. But afterwards it got a bit extreme with the skits of the old films of when what would happen when a black man becomes president. I think this was very damaging to the black race and although I am a Democrate, this show seemed too much on the democratic side rather than being impartial. At one point towards the last 20 minutes I felt this show would be better on BET and not CNN.

As a whole the show was okay but definitely I would reformate some of the material so that the comedy is tapered down for all audiences versus what he would do on a regular comedy night. Afterall, this was on at a time (10:00pm) where alot of viewers were tuning in.

Just my two cents

[ # 212806 ] Comment from Laurie [October 26, 2008, 8:22 pm]

Seriously OMG! I am a white woman who has been working hard for 4 years trying to get people past this level of “humor”. 9 days before the election and this idiot comes on? He made a joke that “W must be the worst president ever if America is considering a black guy next”… what message does that send? I am so upset - did that really just happen? Of course a Republican is behind this - CNN knew D.L.’s shtick. SNL - very funny. CNN - very not funny.

[ # 212838 ] Comment from theresa [October 26, 2008, 10:54 pm]

I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS!!! I FELT LIKE THROWING UP WATCHING THAT SHOW. HE IS AN IDIOT TO SAY THE LEAST AND DOING NOTHING FOR OBAMA. SO MUCH FOR ALL OF THE STRIDES THAT HAVE BEEN MADE TO MOVE US FORWARD…WHY DON’T WE SEE WHITES WITH THIS NONSENSE. ALL BLACKS DON’T HAVE PROBLEMS WITH CHOLESTEROL…WHAT DOES EVERYTHING ABOUT BLACKS HAVE TO BE DEPICTED AS NEGATIVE…EVEN BY US. THIS TYPE OF FOOLISHNESS HAS TO BE REJECTED BY US AS A PEOPLE. WE NEED TO BOYCOTT THESE COMEDIANS THAT THINK THIS MESS IS FUNNY. THINK ABOUT OUR KIDS AND THEIR FUTURE…WILL THAT STILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE OVERALL NEGATIVE PORTRAYED IMAGE OF BLACKS?

[ # 213037 ] Comment from patrick [October 27, 2008, 9:04 am]

This was the worst show ever. It degraded African-Americans at a time were racial conflicts is at its highest.

[ # 213038 ] Comment from Roo [October 27, 2008, 9:05 am]

Man I was looking online to see if I was the only Black person in America who felt outrage after witnessing DL’s repugnant display of self-hate, bafoonery and coonery on CNN this weekend. I hope that everyone writes CNN an e-mail & let’s them know that this clown does not represent us. We’re trying to move forward. It’s time for the minstel shows to end. Unfortunately, nobody sent DL the memo.

[ # 213073 ] Comment from Jim [October 27, 2008, 10:22 am]

His show sucks and it’s not funny - and it hurts Obama, too.

I did get a laugh from ‘jambalaya juice’, though.

[ # 213149 ] Comment from Liz [October 27, 2008, 2:02 pm]

DL,

I admire you, your intelligence and your humor. What the hell were you thinking? Your debut was a disaster? I am ashamed, sad and embarrassed. I really thought your show would be sort of on the premise of the Bill Maher show, “not”. Nonetheless, what is your problem with the latent satire, what was that. B.S. no one needs to see that crap especially internationaly. You, have knocked me down personally a trillion notches. I built you up and campaigned for so many to watch you, what an embarrassment, what a joke! Where was the real D.L. Hugley and his intelligence? Get Lost, who needs this crap!

[ # 213164 ] Comment from John Smith [October 27, 2008, 2:39 pm]

OMG, Somebody please tell Mr DL Hughley to do himself and a lot of others a favor and just not come on air next week. He may be funny and I am not even sure of that anymore watchint that so call show on saturday but for the sake of everything that is good and decent, he need not to come back on air for another “episode” of that train wreck of a “show”.

I understand that he is an intelligent man and all of that but somebody in the community need to sit him down and give him and his “producers” a lesson in History, shows about PIMP, chicken wings and stupid stuffs like that and CNN is given him a platform to propagate this nonsense of a show.

Just in case Mr DL Hugley forgot CNN is not a National Network, it is a Worldwide (Global) network and billions of people are watching all around the world, we do not need this baffoonry (if that is a correct work) and it is it not just understnad that i am really really upset with the whole “show”.

Please don’t give people on the fence a chance to talk smack about black people anymore. A word is enough…..

[ # 213192 ] Comment from Jated Green [October 27, 2008, 3:55 pm]

DL, I think you were very funny in the Kings of Comedy. Your show on CNN Sunday, seen around the world was very hurtful and brought back bad memories for me and other black folks growing up in America. Fire all your writers and start over. Good luck.

[ # 213199 ] Comment from Marsha [October 27, 2008, 4:23 pm]

So I decided to ask all of my friends who happened to be black if they saw the Hughley show on CNN last night. And some of them said that, they didn’t even bother because they knew it was going to put us in a negative light. They were quite familiar with Hughley’s comedy already. I can honestly say I don’t blame them for not watching because it was hurtful to the ears on some of the stuff he said. And after I saw that skit from back in 1930’s…with the guys on there speaking I was like Oh no…WHY DL??? WHY???

[ # 213212 ] Comment from Tosha [October 27, 2008, 5:11 pm]

I think that DL Hughley’s performance is the worst I’ve even seen in my life. He and CNN sunk to the lowest! I have lost respect for CNN and Hughley. I am sick and tired of the media and comedians slandering people with their stupid, unintelligent commentary and dumb opinions. We have to elevate to a new standard to compete in a growing global economy.

[ # 213572 ] Comment from L. Howard [October 28, 2008, 3:12 pm]

Like most of the responses to this show, I was completely shocked and in rage. My first thought was that the same people who have driven this country into ruin, paid D.L. Hughley to perform this disgusting minstrel show. This is the same kind of “house N—-er” that sold out whomever strove to break the chains of slavery and injustice on the plantations of the past. This man must not have any dignity or self-respect, to sell himself, and his people, out this way. Who in the world previewed this garbage and decided it was ready to be presented before the public!!? I would swear that his sponsors would have to be John McCain, Palin and the Republican party, and is it really any coincidence that it was aired at this time with probably the biggest CNN promotion of a show ever!!? It seems they aired promotionals every five minutes. D.L. is horribly unfunny and is increasingly becoming an imbarrassment to African Americans, much like Chris Rock’s grinning “coonish” antics. These two men are our modern day “Steppin’ Fetchit-Uncle Toms,” and would do anything to make a buck. I was so dissappointed with CNN, that I immediately wrote them, informed all of my friends to watch re-runs of this garbage, and will curtail my support of CNN from now on. D.L. must truly be filled with self-loathing, for himself and his people, to make so many of the negative comments and give rise to so many unflattering sterotypes, as he did on this “show.” Every time he mentioned the word black,he used it in reference to something disdainful and disguting. I urge everyone to boycott CNN and any future D.L. Hughley projects. I appeal to our white citizens of America to ignore this sell-out of a human being, for he is only furthering the agenda of those who have ruined our beautiful country, and hope to continue to do so, in order to make a buck. We are one country with the same goals and ideals, and it’s people like D.L. Hughley and Jon Klein, the CNN producer of this journalistic trash, who should be relegated back to suffer the evil and injustices of those times. Even though I, as a black person, have some issues with BET T.V., this show is not even good enough for them. Not even the panned audience thought this show was funny. The only other time that I was as disgusted with CNN programing, was with Lynn Swann’s, the former Steeler football player’s Uncle-Tom views. They must have had to turn over quite a few rocks to get to scale the country to get to him in Pittsburgh. I whole-heartedly support a person’s freedom of choice and political freedom’s. I even know some black repulicans, and McCain supporters who have valid viewpoints and passions, regarding their choices, but D.L. Hughley, Lynn Swann, and you can also throw in Chris Rock, and whereby they all seem to have these same “coonish grins,” are about as relevant to myself, or black people, and the American citizens at large, as monkeys in tuxedos. And little do they know, most often, the people to whom they sell us out for, view them far less than the same.

I was so upset by this show I had to turn it off. Comedy channel - Yes. CNN - NO!!!
I am an open-minded African-American male who has no problem with D.L. However, take that —- back to Def Comedy Jam!!!
This time that we live is too important for this foolishness to go around the world.

Not to get religious on ya fam but like Judas, who betrayed Jesus for a purse of silver is representative of what we see with various black “media appointed” leaders and celebrities. Having worked in Public Relations for more than 12 plus years, I am witnessing more than ever before, this fight or flight attitude within the ranks of our, “media appointed” black brass. This group gained it’s wealth and status because they were willing to be sell outs. We were forced to just sit back and take it, while they feasted upon our misery. The media continues it’s attempt to “brand” us by giving exposure and forums to those that represent us least or reflect a “clown” like image, designed, to paint us as clowns. Obama, has raised our image so fast that this “niche” so many used for gain is closing. Like Judas, they will leave behind a legacy of betrayal. D.L. Hughley, Damon Wayans, Jesse Jackson, Tavis Smiley, and so many more are media fed brats and are soon becoming a fading breed. Let’s not take back the silver they were given. It’s theirs they earned it.

I found this thread by googling “Hughly” and “Unfunny” after about 5 minutes of watching this painful ripoff of the Daily Show. I’m a liberal Democrat and I swear I would rather watch Bill O’Reilly on Fox than endure another minute of this crap. Seriously, what could CNN be thinking?

[ # 215808 ] Comment from Ert [November 2, 2008, 5:36 am]

What a dissapointment… I threw up watching this show on Nov 1. I could not believe my eyes… Here we are on the eve of the most important milestone in world history and see the “fool” on CNN (the most watched channel in the world) in white-faced comedy poking fun at the very people who will decide this election. There is absolutely nothing substantive in this show. It will only to tip the scale to those who hate black people and, notwithstanding every positive thing Obama represents, will cause his platform to go down to defeat… CNN is am very ashamed of you.

[ # 215865 ] Comment from sadonea [November 2, 2008, 8:52 am]

I am very disappointed with CNN’s decision to add a comedy show to their schedule hosted by DL Hughley.

DL Hughley does not represent the African American’s view, humor or expression on any topic and CNN should have made a statement before airing the show reflecting that.

This is not a show that is beneficial to the public on any level. I will not watch it and I feel that this comedy show was aired for political reasons. I fear that this show was not a very wise investment for DL Hughley.

[ # 216184 ] Comment from Floyd [November 2, 2008, 9:26 pm]

I am so sad and disappointed in CNN. I am black, and have come to regard CNN as one of the most respected cable news stations on television. Doesn’t anyone see how this undermines us all? I too want black programming, but not at such a high cost. Comedy is good, but this is not the time in history for buffoonery. Who is he opening the door for anyhow? Minstrel is Minstrel, and I don’t care how much money DL is paid. Obama deserves better. I would expect this from FOX. Shame on you CNN!

[ # 217301 ] Comment from Chris [November 4, 2008, 4:04 pm]

First off naturally funny? Are you naturally high? DL is NOT funny he’s what we like to call an attack comedian. He don’t tell jokes he picks on the audience. The jokes he does tell you have heard from other comics minus a few key words like “Bitch”,, “ho”, M**** F*****” which are added so they sound like HIS jokes.

I am disappointed in CNN. They went from Bernie Shaw to DL hughley. That’s all that needs to be said. Next month CNN will bring out a new show. Late night fairy tale hour with host Andrew Dice Clay.

[ # 225816 ] Comment from DL [November 16, 2008, 1:28 am]

I don’t have anything at all against CNN giving DL this opportunity to excel. However, as my wife, 13 yrs old son and I have watched his shows, it has been with decreasing anticiaption each time. He is not in his element or, put differently, he has yet to find his groove. I’ve never cared for his stand-up when he goes after the audience, but that is what he became known for way back when. But if he were sitting in the audience and I was on stage, I would be dogging him out BIG TIME, and not letting go. Everything from the fake baffoon-like smile in his advertisement to the well-screened and edited “Negro” humor he displays is horrible. I cringe while watching. My son begs me to turn the channel - but I can’t - I’m just waiting for the sandman to yank his a## off the stage…. Sorry DL - if you can’t keep it real, please, PLEASE don’t do it at all.

Geez, this is the first time I’ve seen this. What a horrible idea. Wonder how long it’s going to last?
