OMG! I want more Bollywood in Hollywood on So You Think You Can Dance! In fact I want Bollywood every week!!! Katee and Joshua danced their hearts out in that number and I will be sad to see them split up next week on the show.
i’ve been wondering for awhile why they haven’t showcased different types of dancing styles from around the world. indian dancing like the kind in the bollywood clip from last night is fun, but i think the judges were really lenient. they basically gave the couple a pass just because the dance was fun. their dancing was ATROCIOUS. their technique was awful, they “westernized” it too much and were really clumsy. it was not graceful at all.

I really resent that comment you just wrote julie. I think they did an excellent job. You would not be able to pull that off within the 5 days you had to learn those intense dance moves, and execute it the way they had.
the thing is, those weren’t intense dance moves. the dance was dumbed down quite a bit to accomodate dancers who have no experience with any type of indian dance. was it fun? sure. was it good? not at all. and the judges completely overlooked that..perhaps because they didn’t realize how bad it is…but in that case, they should have had a judge more well-versed in different types of world dance.
and, actually, i would have been able to learn “those intense dance moves” because i’ve done indian dance for over 20 years. do i think they should have danced just as well as people who are familiar with indian dance? no. but they shouldn’t get a pass just for trying it. the judges don’t give the dancers lenient treatment when they’re trying sambas or tangos, so why should the dancers get away with a really mediocre indian dance?
I mostly agree with Julie. And sure, if this was not a dance competition in its final stages, I would agree with the “at least they’re trying” mentality. At this point, they need to really look at the technique. Honestly, BOLLYWOOD DANCE on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, made me ILL. And after Mia made the comment of wanting to see the “big Bollywood number with all the people”, you can bet that’s what they’ll do over the next few weeks. They’ll open the show with a big EXOTIC bollywood piece. UGH! WFT!!!

I thought Kaytee and Joshua did a good job with what they were given. It was weird including Bollywood as a category, because Bollywood doesn’t have a single defined dance style. It goes anywhere from Indian classical to jarring Westernized numbers, and all variations in between. I applaud the choreographer for trying to showcase something that will appeal to an audience that has no clue what Bollywood is - just like Kaytee didn’t. I think they deserve a free pass for being stuck with a routine where none of the judges it as bad. What are they going to say? Your hand movement wasn’t graceful? Kaytee wasn’t shy enough in the roll-in to Joshua, just grinned widely. The whole aspect of facial expressions in Bollywood is about acting, and which of those women do you think can possibly do an imitation of a shy Indian girl? I agree with Gita - Please, no more Bollywood stuff. Bollywood isn’t a dance style. If you want ethnic dancing, then you’ve to get Chinese, Japanese and so on. And call the show So You Think You Can Prance
Julie- Pleeeez! What, should they have just not done Bollywood at all? Look at the buzz and interest this dance created for Bollywood. Aren’t you happy about that?
Your comments are elitist and out of context. It almost sounds like you were offened that ‘non-experienced dancers’ were the ones who got to showcase Bollywood to a Western audience. You need to understand this is a dance competition not a pageant. Josh and Katee were given 3-days!!!! to learn this dance. Could you have pulled this off. Their dance was NOT ATROCIOUS as you mentioned. They were awesome. Of course it’s not going to meet your standards, but you have to give them credit given the circumstances and venue. You should be happy that Bollywood has received such a favorable response across the U.S. and world because of these 2 very talented and classy dancers. Because of them, more people want to know what Bollywood is about. After this dance I went to youtube and watched ‘real’ indian dancers doing Bollywood and was very impressed. Sure, they danced with a different flare, culture, and style, but I wasn’t anymore impressed than when Josh and Katee danced, because I understand that 3 days is different than 3 years.
I dont know what that Julie character is talking about, Josh and Kate did an excellent number, the judges made the right comments, 5 thumbs up. Personally I think Julie is jealous, the hand movements, body movements, style etc. was very well executed - so whats your problem. I want to see more of bollywood on so you think you can dance. Julies been dancing for 20 years so shes probably in her late 40’s, shes old skool.
i was actually very happy to see the bollywood dance on the show because it represented an exploration of other dances than the typical routines we see on the show. so i was not offended by the mediocre quality. however, i was irritated that katie and joshua essentially got a free pass for trying it. and the above commenter was right — bollywood isn’t a type of dance…it’s an amalgam of different techniques…but at least the show tried.
Wow.. Julie, Gita and Guru.. Man.. you guys are awesome .. perfect example of “half glass empty”-ites.
Pathetic.. God Bless your clan.

Well,
I am from Bombay, India and watched the dance on youtube and really enjoyed.
Katie and Joshua danced even better than the original song and i really enjoyed watching the dancing esp western folks fdancing on the indian number
I was just watching today’s show when the judges mentioned that they did bollywood and I had to look up the show. I have to say that the technical aspect of the dance was verry easy. The judges just plain don’t know much about Indian dance, and based on the American interpretation. Katie and Joshua did however do a great dance that was very precise and in sync. I have to say a majority of the time India actors have sloppy dances in their movies.

I think they danced better than our Indian actors. There was much more zing in it, probably how it used to be in the very olden days…

Does any one know wha the music they were dancing to is called and how I can get hold of it (preferably to free download)…. TA
There was a certain grace the performers lacked. It wasn’t horrible, but you can tell that someone from a different style of dance is performing the piece. As for bollywood being a style of dance? I completely agree with those of you who said it wasn’t. Bollywood is an industry; its compromised of various styles of indian dance and therefore is very unstructured. It’s like someone saying “Hey, I do hollywood dance”.. it just doesnt make sense. I teach “Bollywood” at a local recreation centre, and I really had a hard time figuring out what exactly it was that I wanted to teach… Afterall, bollywood dance and songs is what we see in movies, theres no set structure.. I decided to teach my class different types of Indian dance… bhangra, classical, cinematic and garba… the class really loved it!
