Last week Zoo held people captive, like an animal at a zoo; and tonight at 9p on CBS it will do the same. People are intrigued by the show’s notion that one day the animals will take back what is rightfully theirs.
Now you know the premise of this summer thriller, what are things you don’t know about the show that will make watching it so much more interesting. A few weeks ago cast members James Wolk, Nonso Anozie and Nora Arnezeder plus Executive Producers Cathy Konrad, Jeff Pinker, Scott Rosenberg and the author James Patterson shared some behind the scenes secrets from the show at the CBS Studios Summer Press Day.

Did they always intend on turning James Patterson’s words into a television show?
Cathy Konrad said, “We were concocting it initially as a feature film and thinking about it on kind of a different level which was actually scale it kind of make a more kind of contained thriller, like a Cloverfield or a District 9.” Then she added, “But as we kind of got under the scenes and read between the lines of the book and we kept kind of challenging the material in our creative meetings, it became clear that there was such a bigger world to explore with this and that kind of teching it down wouldn’t really do it justice.”

Did they use real animals or are they computer generated?
James Wolk told us, “All the animals that we’ve had down on set, and it’s been tons of animals, because it should also be said there hasn’t been a ton of CGI. There’s been a lot of real animals on set.” Then he explained, “They all come with trainers. They’re all incredibly well-trained as far as wild animals go. They can’t talk, but they’re well-trained animals and all the proper precautions are taken.”

But are there problems with working with animals as compared to humans?
Nora Arnezeder revealed, “Sometimes they fall asleep in the middle of the scene and we really need them, so we have to wait 30 minutes for them to wake up.”

What type of animals will we see on the show?
According to Wolk we will see lions, bears, wolves and rats. Remember they all are real and they are not made on the computer.

Where will Zoo be traveling to?
James Pinker says, “This show travels to Tokyo and to Rio and to Mobile, Alabama and Antarctica and Paris. It truly is a global thriller and the story spans the globe and their characters travel around the world.”

And this is this most shocking reveal?
Even though the show will be spanning the world, it is filmed entirely in New Orleans. So when you watch Zoo, be prepared to be amazed that Wolk, Arnezeder and Anozie are on US soil and not in Africa like the show says they are. I still can’t believe how amazingly The Big Easy easily substitutes for the rest of the world.
