[ # ] Justin Bieber schools David Letterman
January 31st, 2011 under David Letterman, Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber was on The Late Show with David Letterman and the 16 year old singer schooled the 63 year old host on Twitter. I know the teen sensation is not the first, so you would think by now he would’ve figured it out. Twitter is not that hard. Hopefully it will sink in for the gap toothed host because afterall the person trying to teach him about Twitter is almost a fourth of his age. Ouch that has to hurt.
Now what hurt me during that interview is when the Baby Baby singer said he was only going to school for 3 hours a day, 15 hours a week. I understand that besides school he has a full time job, but when I was his age I also went to school full time and worked part time. Unlike him who is earning millions, I was earning minimum wage…I so think I did something wrong because all that education and I am still not making what he makes in one night.

While you’re probably being facetious to some degree, I would just like to give some food for thought: a person’s wealth should not be equated with their success in life. The latter is derived from self-satisfaction through personal achievement. It would seem you know the value of a day’s hard work because you successfully juggled an education and a job, Rising to meet this challenge is a success, I would argue, more significant than Bieber’s success as a musician simply because it demonstrates the personal capacity to meet similar challenges later in life. While Bieber may be getting a large paycheck now, there’s no guarantee he will be as well off in 20 years when his celebrity status will have surely waned. Hopefully, he will consider himself just as successful at that time, but as of now there are hundreds of people putting in their time & effort to make sure just one talented, pretty face attracts the public’s attention and subsequently rakes in the most money.

Also, about that whole 15 hours per week? The 8 hour per day system in public schools is horribly inefficient. It was originally designed to prepare industrial/machine workers for similar work schedules & never changed after the industrial revolution. If you focus your attention to two subjects one day and two different subjects the next day in an independent-study environment, I would bet money you could learn just as much (if not more) than a comparable student attending public school.

Well, this was more philosophy than I wanted to dwell into. I at least hope you will look at yourself with a higher regard now! (and you still get to maintain your privacy too!)
