[ # ] The American Idols lip-sync during group numbers
March 27th, 2009 under American Idol 8

Finally after weeks of speculation thanks to Justin Guarini, American Idol confirms to the NY Times that the American Idols lip-sync the group numbers.

“Every single year we can’t stand the group performances,” Mr. Guarini said. “I know they can’t stand it either. And I think what makes them even worse now is that they’re lip-synched. They’re really prerecorded now.”
Manfred Westphal, a spokesman for FremantleMedia North America, which produces “American Idol” for Fox, at first denied the charge, saying on Tuesday: “The Idols don’t lip-sync, period.” But on Wednesday, in an e-mail message, Mr. Westphal said: “Due to extensive choreography and to balance their voices with open mikes against a screaming audience, the Idols do sing along to their own prerecorded vocal track during the group performances only.”

Here is my question, if they are lip-syncing, why do the songs still sound so horrible?
BTW last night that guy, you know that tall one? Well he was eliminated and they are down to 9.

I really think that, as at venues like the SuperBowl halftime, the lipsyncing is due to technical issues, rather than the abilities of the singers. In the end, we hear each one sing on their own live, so we know what they sound like.

I too am not into the creepy “Up With People” tone of the groups songs, but I think the lypsyncing is due to problems with the audio mix, cordless mics, and all of the noise in the venue.

In the past, some of those opening group numbers have some serious choreography. When they’re finished, you wouldn’t be able to hear them singing because they’d be out of breathe.

I’m not surprise they lip sync. I’m not surprise they do it at football games, etc because of all the noise, you’d never heard them sing.

People complain about singers, Britney, Christina, et al, lip syncing but after you see their routines on stage, you’d never be able to hear them or the lyrics.

Also, there’s always the problem of the voice. Air conditioners, heating, dust, et al not to mention colds, flus, sinus et al. These are spread by contact and the fact that they are in such close quarters only makes matters worse. They are expected to perform regardless of how they feel, fever and all.

So lip syncing does a lot for not only the singer, but the public as well. Would you rather have a show or get pissed because it was cancelled because the singer was sick? And don’t forget the money on a sitter for the evening, dinner and a possible new outfit! Rescheduling is out of the question.

Lip syncing will live on!!!
