You will want to Play the Game
August 30th, 2009 under Movies, Reviews. [ Comments: none ]

Play the Game is a sweet movie about a grandson (Paul Campbell) who teaches his recently widowed grandfather (Andy Griffith) how to be The Player at his retirement community. This movie is so darling as his grandfather goes through the ladies and his grandson tries to land one woman. There are a lot of cute scenes with Andy Griffith as he tries to get back on the dating horse. You will be aaahing when you see where he tries to pick up the ladies and ooohing at his techniques he uses after he meets them. As the two play the field, they both realize who they really are and find love along the with way with other women. As they look for companionship there lot of twist and turns with an ending you will never see coming!
Paul Campbell is great as David and I think he can be the next Ryan Reynolds. This is a role that you never thought you would see Andy Griffith in and he is so good in it including the bedroom scene. Who knew he was so charming? Doris Roberts and Liz Sheridan are so cute as his suitors and Marla Sokoloff is great as David’s. Geoffrey Owens and Juliette Jeffers are so funny as David’s BFFs that someone should give them a sitcom ASAP.
At the screening I went to yesterday, the writer/director/producer Marc Fienberg was there doing Q&A after the movie. He told us the movie is loosely based on his 89 year old grandfather who got back in the dating scene and shared everything with him. That is something I can relate to with my dad and I am sure I am not the only who can say that, which makes this movie so much more relevant. Feinberg also told us he landed Andy Griffith and Liz Sheridan for his independent movie. Andy signed on for two reasons, 1 – He doesn’t die at the end and 2 – He gets a sex scene. Liz Sheridan agreed to do it just because she got a sex scene with Andy. How funny is that?
All-in-all Play the Game is one of the sweetest things I have seen in a really long time and highly recommend seeing it with someone you care about like an older relative!

Michael Meyers will celebrate next year’s Halloween in 3D!!!
August 30th, 2009 under Halloween 2. [ Comments: none ]

Halloween 2 just came out in theaters this weekend, and there is already talks of a third one in development according to the LA Times. The Weinstein Company’s co-Chairman Bob Weinstein told the paper they are planning on releasing Halloween 3D next summer. 3D has proven to give movies a box office lift, and after seeing The Final Destination in 3D it is an awesome effect that really changes the feel of a horror movie in a good terrifying way. So I am really looking forward to see Michael Meyers do it once again, just hopefully it will be a sh!tload better than the first time they did. G-d Halloween 3 sucked big time, one of the worst movies ever made.
Now back to the new one that is coming out next year, Bob Weinstein confirmed what Rob Zombie hinted at the H2 press day roundtable I was at, that he will not be back to direct it. A new director, yet to be named will be taking over the franchise and taking it in a different direction than Zombie. It will be interesting to see if that director will use the cast members, who did express interest to us at that roundtable in returning if there was a third one. Scout Taylor-Compton told us she would be down for it because she feels there is more she can do with Laurie Strode. Tyler Mane, who plays Michael Meyers told us he was signed on for the first two of them and was not sure if he would come back for a third, so it will be interesting to see if he will be back to wear mask. One actor’s return that might be difficult to explain after how the second one ended, who also said he would be back is Malcolm McDowell who played Dr Loomis. He told us, when I asked if he thought he would be back for the second one after how it ended for him in the first one, “Of course! I’ll be back for the third one. Even though I know I lost my head.” So I said, “hey there’s plastic surgery now”, and he said matter-of-factly, “Who cares, it’s not real.” It will be fun to see if they can find a way to bring it back and if so how!!! Seriously I can’t wait to see wait to see what they do with Halloween 3D when it comes out next summer!

The Human Family Tree premieres on Nat Geo tonight!
August 30th, 2009 under National Geographic. [ Comments: none ]

Did you know that all DNA can be traced back to Africa 60,000 years ago? I didn’t either until I heard about the The Human Family Tree that premieres on The National Geographic Channel tonight at 9p. The 2 hour special goes to Astoria, NY and takes the DNA samples of several people there and traces their DNA from Africa to Queens. This special is really interesting on the way it tracks how they got from Africa to Queens. It shows how and why people migrated all over the world and yet all wound up in one place. Maybe if we all knew that we came from the same place, we might all get along better? This special is really educational and I highly suggest watching it because it really explains all of our ancestries and let’s be real how many of us know where we came past a few generations back?
If you want to know your family’s roots, you can order an DNA kit and do the test yourself via The Genographic Project. I was shocked and really interested to learn out how my family migrated from Africa to NYC.

Three awesome movies rightfully top the Box Office
August 30th, 2009 under Halloween 2, Inglourious Basterds, The Final Destination. [ Comments: none ]

It is very rare these days that there are three good movies out there to see at the same time and this weekend that was just the case! The Final Destination, Inglourious Basterds and Halloween 2 were the top 3 movies for the weekend according to the LA Times. Warner Bros’ FD4 brought in $28.3 million whose total was aided by being screened in 3D in over half the theaters it was shown in. Not far behind were The Weinstein Company’s Inglourious Basterds that added $20 million to its total of $73.8 million domestically and Rob Zombie’s H2 made $17.4 million which was over $2 million more than it cost to make it. Not bad at all!
Seriously all three movies are must-sees, so if you haven’t seen any of the three yet go out on this hot day and enjoy watching them in air conditionered theater!!! What better way to spend a hot day then with a really enjoyable flick!
